Sorry if this is being discussed somewhere but I couldn't see it. What's this tosh on ITV teletext about Jennifer Saunders being the new Doctor Who? Other than tosh, that is!

I'm sure it is tosh. but, if anything it might be for a one off story. Perhaps some aliens interfere with the doctor's Regeneration that causes him to change sex temporarily, but it is sorted by the end of the story and he regenerates properly into a male body?

Could be the "lighthearted Christmas special"?

doesn't this story resurface year on year..especially when rumours start circulating that the present lead might be leaving? stirs up some great column inches especially on the day of the Press screening for the Christmas special.

Yes, and it was always Joanna Lumley rumoured to be playing the Doctor. So its the tabloids natural progression to opt for Jennifer Saunders. Who next? June Whitfield? Jane Horrocks?

Just had a thought.

She could play the doctor in another one of those French and Saunders Perrier taking sketches. I could see Dawn French playing Rose or a fat Dalek.

The Sun's article makes no sense - they talk about David Tennant being in the three specials, and then in the same breath say that the BBC want to get a woman to play the Doctor in one of them?

My guess is that they actually want Jennifer Saunders as a guest star in one of the specials. As usual a grain of truth buried beneath tons of Sun bullsh*t.

Heard on Radio 2 this morning that she was playing the 'first' female timelord. This is of course complete tosh as what on earth was Romana if not female.

This is all True!!

I have it on good Authority that Joanna Lumley will be the next incarnation of the Master.

Maybe a parallel universe thing - the Doctor and his companion Martha meet The Doctor and her companion Arthur.

Unless by 'first' they mean in Time lord history she is the first Time lady, that up until that point only men were allowed to train at the academy and become time lords. Perhaps she is like a Pankhurst for the women of Gallifrey and fought to allow them to train to become Time Lords/ladies. She won her fight and set the way for the likes of Romana and (can't believe i'm mentioning her) the Rani.

Or the far simpler and more likely explanation that the bloke on Radio 2 just didn't have a clue and was using the word 'timelord' to mean 'Doctor', hence "first female Time Lord".

i think that they will just swap minds for one episode. therefore the doctor is in her body. just a thought

Not too implausible, we saw something similar with Cassandra's bodyswapping in 'New Earth'.

If this was true Saunders wouldn't even be the second female Doctor.

Joanna Lumley played the part in a Comic Relief spoof a few years back

Arabella Weir played a female version of the Doctor on a Big Finish CD a couple of years ago

Of course the key factors here are Joanna Lumley played one in a Spoof, not the actual series and the Big Finish products aren't regarded as canon anyway so that counts out Arabella Weir.

Have to admit I'm not adverse to seeing JS in one of the specials hopefully in a lead role but I don't buy her as the Doctor, thats not to say I can't see any woman being the Doctor as I personally think Joanna Lumley would make a brilliant one or even somebody like Helen Mirren or Judi Dench would add a very different dynamic to the character. However for the time being I'm very happy to stick with and to David Ten-inch......sorry slip of the tongue there

According to the story in DS News Rhys "Professional Welshman" Ifans is in the running to be the next Doctor. Never mind that Tennant has said he isn't leaving yet

Jennifer Saunders As Dr Who

Start calling it "Nurse who" and destroy the show completely.
