I just bought a Hitachi L42VP01U 42" LCD TV to replace the old 28"crt (which had blown up in a spectacular fashion). Oh good, I thought, the new box will have dedicateed audio line out which I can connect to my hi-fi. No more messing about with scart breakout boxes .

So... I connected up the audio line out on the TV to the spare input on my hifi. Nothing, zippo, ziltch. I checked the manual, went through the audio setup screen, found the graphic equaliser and the subwoofer on/off but no audio out. After an hour or so of messing about, I phoned the Hitachi helpline number in the manual. I explained the problem and asked "how do I enable the audio outputs?"

The helpline person sounded a bit sheepish and very apologetic as he explained that the audio line out only worked with the analog tuner as source !!!! "What!" I said, "how is that digital ready? Why does it not mention this in the manual?" It went very quiet and you can imagine the rest...

So, there it is. Beware the digital ready sticker, it's a lie.

The 'Digital Ready' sticker is merely a guarantee of a certain minimum spec - I doubt that includes having phono sockets out for audio from the digital tuner?.

Is there such a thing as "Digital Ready"?

I've not seen or read anything about an industry agreed standard in the same manner as the EICTA HD Ready spec in regards to the functions of an iDTV, of course manufacturers and retailers can slap anything onto their products and as always it's then upto the buyer to know what they want and not take anything at face value.

Do you mean the 'Digital tick' logo (http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/en/how.html)
All that is meant to indicate is that the equipment can receive DTT broadcasts.

I don't think it's much to do with being digital ready, it just sounds like a cock up doesn't it? - surely audio outputs should output all audio that it's selected to.

SUggests that the digital TV board is just a plug in module that got forgotten about when they did the checks!

I think you'v been told alot of sh*t, I had 27" Hitachi (The shame!!), any ho the unit had L & R conections that outputed what ever you were watching, tuner, scart or anything else, sounds like a "Dry solder" or somthing, get it replaced or repaired via the sales agent.

I tried the analog tuner, just in case. There was still no sound from the Audio Line Out sockets.

I think you'v been told alot of sh*t, ........., get it replaced or repaired via the sales agent.
Neither I nor the shop believe the Hitachi helpline. It just doesn't sound sensible. The shop has agreed to replace/exchange the TV and reduce the price due to pricematching . Bad news is; next available Sat delivery is 26th . Fingers crossed.

Replacement arrived. It has sound output coming out of the line output phono sockets . However, when you switch to one of the scart inputs the sound from the line out is still whichever channel (analogue or digital) you were last tuned to, while the sound from the TV speakers is what is coming from the scart source . What a crazy system. I've had to use the headphone output to my hi-fi, in order to always get the sound for whatever is on the screen (what you see is what you hear).

My daughter had this on a (now returned) Grundig LCD TV she had for her bedroom.

It had a built in DVD but the sound from that wasn't outputted on the phonos. It remained on the TV channel sound however, like you, the correct source came from the sets speakers.

Looks like this is a fairly common state of affairs!

Well I'm not alone then. Got a Hitachi L42VP01U and tried everything to get my surround sound working. Audio line out doesn't work. Headphone socket doesn't work. Subwoofer feed doesn't work. Read the manual many times. Thought I was going mad for a while there, till I got onto this forum.
Next idea. Forget the telly! I can use my Virgin Media set top box. Guess what? No audio line out from the Samsung box! Even naff pace boxes had audio line out
Is there such a thing as a scart signal splitter? I dont want to throw much more money at this.
Fed up

I use a manual SCART switch box which as well as running video/audio to the TV has separate audio out which I run to my A/V amp as well the audio out on its VCR SCART socket which I run to my hi-fi amp via a converter lead. Costs a tenner for the switch box.
