I think he's great in other stuff. But In Doctor Who I've rarely found him convincing.
He's either too pantomimey, or he pulls extreme faces to depict emotion.
Sometimes he's okay.

I think, yes, he's a very good actor, but his Doctor is just too manic at times, especially after chris Eccleston, who was blinding. Even when he's being deadly serious he snaps back to shouty and ruins the efect And one thing I don't think he is is sexy! In Casanova maybe, but not particularly as the Doctor.

Well obviously he's no Sylvester McCoy or Colin Baker....

Back to his acting now... yeah, he's just brilliant.

He is a fine actor in the right role, it has all ready been mentioned he is to perform Hamlet at Stratford, which has me worried, cos his Romeo was well frankly a load of old pants, BUT in the Comedy of Errors, he was great.

Maybe he has a talent for certain roles and not others, the thing with the Doctor is the actor makes the role his own, just by being cast as the doctor.

If some think him a gurning hyper active fruitcake, then that incarnation of the doctor is a gurning hyper active fruitcake.

In some respects it is a win win situation for the actor chosen.

Tennant is a fantastic actor and was certainly born to play the Doctor.

That said the best actor in Britain right now is without doubt John Simm. The range of characterisations he is able to play is amazing from slapstic comedy to psychotic monster and even a mix of both.

I really can't think of any other actor with that kind of range, he certainly upstaged Tennant in series 3.

Was privalaged to see him in the west end over the summer and seriously he is that good that with no make-up just his acting skills he had me convinced I was watching someone else entirely. Its like he becomes posessed sometimes.

Totally agree, I find the fangirling over him rather odd. CE is far more interesting and sexy.

LOL. Yeah, you might have something there. It's been proven that you can get alot worse for the role.

I guess it's always a bit of a compromise, as it would hard to a "world class" actor to fill a TV role, especially one that could get them seriously typecast.

Apart from the very best, I guess most actors do some stuff better than others. Some can do quirky comedy well, others can do the serious stuff better.

Bit like when they cast Timothy Dalton as Bond, "hey, he's a Shakespearean actor, he'll be great at bringing more depth to the role." But he turned out to be a disaster.

Yeah, you kind of wish he'd just tone it down a bit at times, as it starts to feel a bit silly.
