My friend's combi has gone dumb

My friend has a small combi Tv and VCR which they've had for about a year. When they record and play back there is vision but no sound. If they play a pre-recorded tape it plays sound and vision.

Any ideas ????

Thanks.

Sounds simple enough, recording head is worn out or very dirty, if it needs replacing your talking about £30-£40.

OK thanks suppose I could open it up and clean the heads.

Can't see the head wearing in a year it isn't used very much.

I think I have Isopropanol somewhere.

More likely to by dirt rather than wear - an alcohol based spary onto a cotton bud usually does the trick - we were cleaning industry spec computer tape decks like this 40 yrs ago and there is nothing better since!

I've cleaned the heads on my old VCR and used to do it with my old reel to reel tape recorders.
Not sure how to get into the combi 14" TV/Video will have a look next time I'm over to my friends. Phoned them and they said they'd try a tape cleaner but I said it's better to do it by hand.

It can also be a dry-jointed lead at the A/C Head or even eeprom corruption.

Or the heads may simply be out of alignment.
