Tv install

Hey,

Looking for some info, just got my first house and looking at setting up a decent home entertainment system. So i have a few questions

I would like to have my DVD recorder, sky box and freeview box sitting in a cupboard just outside the living room, Is it possible to get a infrared extender to allow me to use my remote controls without being in direct line of the units? If so where will i get such?

Also when connecting my tv with dvd/sky box should i use HDMI? Will the quality be affected by the cable run as it will prob be around 10meters?

Thanks for the help

Cheers

10m HDMI cables are fine, I've installed quite a few of them.

Another question is, I am new to tv instals but can see myself getting into it in the future. So while i have all the carpets up and access to under the floors would it be worht while running cables to each room for future installs?

If so should i run Cat 5 cables or coaxal cable?

Cheers

Be very careful about siting these pieces of kit inside a cupboard, they need a decent airflow to keep cool. It needs to be a very large cupboard or be well vented (fans?).

Its is a pretty large cupboard, If i need to add some extra cooling then i will also do this. So is it just a case of getting a remote extender?

Any recomendation?

There are lots of solutions for this; of which perhaps the cheapest is a Powermid kit. You're looking at less than £25. If you can't find one with Google then drop me a line and I'll sot one for you.

Running CAT5 is a good idea but I'd still run RF as a stopgap.

CAT5 makes most sense if you plan to have a centralised AV server system streaming content to local players. 3 or 4 runs to a point near each TV screen would give you a reasonable level of futureproofing. HD can be sent down two of those with baluns on each end to handle the conversion from- and back to HDMI. You might also consider running a single cable to a point near the light switch in some of the main rooms. This would give you the option to add keypads easily if you go in that direction in the future.
