Formatting - Sony RDR-VX420

I have the above video cassette recorder/DVD recorder, which, until now, I have just used for recording off air programmes which, after watching are erased (using the "erase all titles" option) before making a new recording, using the same disc over and over again. However, my intention is to archive some important family videos from tape to DVD so as to preserve them permanently.

Among the list of options that include "Erase all titles" is one for formatting the disc. I am confused as to what "formatting" means. Does it mean to remove the contents of the disc, leaving it clear to record on again (which would seem to be the same as erasing) or is it similar to "fixing" a photgraphic print or film, so as to render it permanent. Regarding my requirement to archive permanent DVD copies, has anyone advice on what is the best option. Thanks in anticipation. D.

Formatting completely wipes the disc, erasing only marks the space as available.

What you're looking for is 'finalising' the disc, which means you can't record anything else on it, but it will play in normal DVD players.

There are also two DVD recording/formatting options, VR or Video - only one type can be played back in normal players - but I can never remember which one it is?
