Is All This 'Fix Business' In The Media Just A Case Of Snobbery?
The way some of the media has reacted especially columnists in newspapers like the Daily Mail and the Guardian I am starting to get a whiff of snobbery from them. I mean how dare a working class kid from a single parent family living in a poor area beat an older, trained, well educated and experienced singer from a stable higher middle class family.

I think it's just to get hype around the show. No one expected him to win, he's the real "marmite" act, lots of people don't like him but obviously enough to for him to win

I think that Leon has won and no one can take that away from him. |

I'm not sure if it's snobbery but I do think it shows how a lot of people are spoilt, simply can't accept not having their own way and they'll scweem and scweem and scweem until they do. Bad sportsmanship from sore losers, the lot of them.

LOL the Guardian and Daily Mail dont normally get lumped together, but I know where you are coming from Arty.
And now The Star has thrown in the PM into the mix for good measure...classic Star. Maybe there should be a Referendum on the matter..ooops forgot the PTB don't trust people to make decisions, so you dont have them. Thank god I live in a Republic. |

I would doubt that snobbery comes into the mix. Most people are predisposed to like Cinderella, rags to riches stories, especially at Christmas.

BTW, Ally Ross in the Sun also favours Rhydian. I don't actually read many papers, but is there any that have come out in support of Leon? |

I don't know what is going on however, I wish they would sort it out. |

I think their reaction is because they think Rhydian is the vastly superior talent. Of course, you could argue the fact that they're not allowed to hold that opinion, but claiming snobbery, especially from the columnists at the Guardianista, is a little far fetched.

Maybe Leon's site needs to be given the same instruction as on Rhydian's site see below!!!
Or maybe we can all email these addresses and also complain!!! "IF YOU COULD NOT GET THROUGH TO PLACE YOUR VOTE FOR RHYDIAN PLEASE EMAIL ALL OF THE FOLLOWING" newsdesk@notw.co.uk AND talkback@the-sun.co.uk AND Chris.Sproston@enablize.com (who is compiling a list of complaints) then 'bump' this up the page of comments, please. If this was rigged the truth needs to be told... If you couldnt vote for Rhydian text Chris Moyles (a Rhyd fan) on 81199 tomorrow(Monday 17th) and PLEASE email address' that have been posted, we need producers to see that Rhydians fans want the truth about why so many couldnt vote! cmon do it for the Rhydler, *** The Media are picking up on voting problems on Saturday. Newspapers using fan site info. See article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...xfactor216.xml |

Some Guardian readers like to think that, but those of us who read neither tend to sneer at both at the same time.
![]() I personally want to get to the bottom of this whole debacle and allow those two young men breathing space. |

Obviously middle-class people don't get divorced or ever live in a 'poor area' ? Leon is not a class icon - he's a young lad that the demographic for TV-show voting liked. women and particularly young women, vote more on TV shows than men and even when Leon was very poor (not shown on his VT) he didn't get in the bottom 2. the comments on here about him being 'cute' suggest that his singing was secondary. had Kylie been in a show like this, some blokes might have voted for her on looks alone, but a great deal less than women do for a young bloke. it's nothing new - were David Cassidy, Donny Osmond and the Bay City Rollers so popular because they were great singers? no! they were the favourites of young girls. look at the old TV footage if you doubt it - 98% of the crowd probably - hardly a man in sight - ever. (BTW one guy from BCR performs with Pauline Black as part of "3 Men and Black", so they weren't entirely talentless, but their talent wasn't the reason for their popularity) the reason that many people have doubted the integrity of the vote and Leon winning is that Leon had a faltering start to the competition, took many weeks to get on the same performance level as the other acts and won - yet Rhydian was putting in the best performance of the show almost every week. it is a sense of injustice that somebody who is an accomplished performer can lose out to somebody with 'promise' and who was so poor in the early weeks that he should have been sent home. Leon stayed in the competition at the expense of other people who were better on the night and no amount of 'cuteness' makes that fair. saying that, Leon may have won the popularity contest and people need to accept that. it may be unjust, but it may be how life is. it is about justice, not class. |

I think that the media scorn is being poured upon Leon because... he's just not as good a performer as Rhydian and it is, (supposedly) meant to be a talent contest, not a who do we feel most sorry for contest. And perhaps because the journalists involved are used to being critics on that basis ![]() Don't get me wrong, I like the boy. But I can see where the critical press is coming from, and it ain't a class thing. |

I really don't think that's the case. I actually think the opposite is true, Rhydian was getting a lot of flak in the beginning for NOT being working-class or whatever, having no sobstory and being trained.

However it must be investigated. |

And let's face it, guys, all this business about snobbery is just a diversion from the fact that the winner is a worse singer than the runner-up.....

I think there is an element of truth to the class things. I have seen fans of Rhydian throw out words like 'respectable' 'decorum' 'chav' etc as ways of getting at Leon. I think some of them do look down on him because of his working class background, and by the same token use Rhydians more middle class up bringing as a way of implying he is somehow a 'better person' than Leon.

that is inverse snobbery. we didn't EVER see Leon in Burberry and trackies. chips for epaulettes, I suggest. |

Not a fact an opinion. I think Leon is infinitely more naturally talented vocally than Rhydian.

I'm sorry, but that statement is ridiculous!
