I was just browsing this section and to my amazement read that somebody said they didn't have a microwave.

My wife and I don't and everybody else we know does. I've never known anyone that doesn't have one.

Who else doesn't?

They are very handy for lots of things other than heating awful microwave meals, although the main use mine gets is cooking pappadums without using oil.

I didn't replace the last one after it gave up the ghost and haven't missed having one at all, I suppose because the only thing I really used it for was de-frosting. I just have to be a bit more organised now if I want to defrost something from the freezer.

That's 3 of us ... more than I expected already.

I must admit I do get scared of food that is "Microwave only"

If there's one thing I cannot abide, it's putting hot food on a cold plate - drives me absolutelty bonkers.

LOL... there's a mate of mine who goes mad about this as well.. when I'm in a puckish mood he gets his meal served on a cold plate while everyone else gets a warmed plate he make get his christmas dinner on a cold plate this year

He maintains that whenever they eat out he *always* gets a dirty fork or spoon

I know it's a bit weird, but it almost makes me feel sick. I realyl does drive me mad - my sister puts my dinner on a cold plate just to wind me up sometimes. I have to microwave th whole thing for a couple of minutes if she does that.

I'm the complete opposite. I don't like putting food on a warm/hot plate. Never seen the point. Unless you eat really slowly, the food isn't there long enough for the plate to make it cold. Besides if someone over-heats the plate you can end up with a nice burn off it.

Back to the microwave question, it's interesting that some of the posters so far state they don't see the need for a microwave. Having had a microwave since the mid-1980's, I don't know how I would prepare meals without one. I just use them without thinking. Each to their own, but I'd honestly be lost without a microwave.

I don't have one either, just more clutter to clean in the kitchen if you ask me.

Brilliant.

The opposite drives me bonkers. Having a plate near me and I yelp ouch everytime I touch it. lol

We don't have one neither and until we get a bigger house we won't be getting one. No need. The only thing that annoys me about not having one is reheating food, but we dont do that often and baked potatoes are meant to be cooked in an oven anyway, it's not the same when their done in a micro.

We've got one but it's charred black inside where the youngest baked a potato in it for about 30 minutes on high.

When I waded in through the smoke, and opened the door, there was a little black nugget sitting there glowing orange in the middle.

Sometimes use it for beans, but very little else.

I don't have one either

They are convenient but OTOH I think they discourage people from actually cooking. When I lived in residence I hardly cooked. I am sure the dramatic growth in the ready meals market over the last decade or two is a consequence of microwave ovens.

I remember when they cost about £300 and people were in awe if you had one

I do have a microwave - but I get infuriated when I hear people call them a "micro".

Don't know why, just an irrational thing.
