I have to disagree with this. Although I'm sure that plenty of people use them just to reheat ready meals, for a period of about 3 years in the 80's, my parents didn't have a cooker/hob at all. All our cooking was done in a convection microwave/grill. Admittedly, there are foods that are less than ideal for cooking in a microwave, but it is perfectly possible to cook everyday meals from scratch in the microwave. As long as you don't mind unbrowned meat, you could probably even do without the convection component.
I now have a microwave as an adjunct to the cooker, and I must admit that it is usually reserved for defrosting/reheating food, but I know that if the situation were to arise where a microwave were the only cooking appliance I had, I wouldn't need to resort to a diet of ready meals only.
