Sat Nav for mobile phone
Keymaker
21-12-2007
I posted the following in the Mobile Phone forum but then noticed this forum which is probably more suitable.......
Sorry I am new here !!!

"Excuse my ignorance on this subject - I spent a couple of hours Googling last night and feel pretty much none the wiser !

I want to put a Sat Nav system on my phone (preferably something from the TomTom range).

There are several things I don't understand (or got confused about last night when reading Google stuff).

1) Do I have to have a 'Smartphone' (not even sure what a Smartphone is) or will my normal mobile do (I have just got a Sony Ericcson K850i) ?

2) Seeing a lot about bluetooth GPS receivers. Do I need to buy one of these as well or has my phone got this built in ?

3) When looking at the TomTom range which package do I get for my phone (getting confused between all the different types) ?

Could someone please give me answers to the above and a general idiots guide to what I need to have/get and how to go about installing it.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Fat chance of a Sony having a built in GPS receiver and I doubt even the most basic TomTom would work because it wants Windows Mobile ideally. It won't work basically.

My advice: Buy a Pocket PC with Phone Capability and Windows Mobile with a GPS package for it with the Bluetooth GPS adapter. Or of course, buy a proper TomTom GPS.

Thanks Teh User.
Looks like I'll be buying the actual TomTom GPS unit then (was hoping to get away with a cheaper option) !!!
Cheers for your help.

That is a seriously old phone now though. I wouldent recommend windows mobile 2003 even to my worst enemy !

This samsung (windows mobile 6) phone looks excellent: http://www.vodafonebusinessshop.co.u...i640-2997.html

And I can recommend from personal experience the 02 XDA graphite and the Vodafone 1210 (exactly the same phone, but the vodafone branded model doesnt have a camara and is about half the price of the 02).

Quite an old phone but one of the cheapest ways to run satnav. Tomtom has been really reliable on it.

I'm picking up an M700 in January because of the touch screen capabilities but will probabably keep the C500 because of its compact size.
