Totally agree. And it's even worse that they had the temerity to make entertainment out of World War II, the extinction of the dinosaurs and the destruction of Big Ben.

An amazing-looking episode that's going to offend all three remaining survivors and their familes? Cripes, what next to get ruffled about?

I'd have thought it actually helps to kickstart interest into past history and events and is a useful metaphor. It looks beautifully shot and I'll certainly be watching. I have great respect for history and the Titanic story is fascinating but I wouldn't even have thought to link a fantasy show with reality in this way, except to say it is a good way of teaching children (and adults) about the past through modern means.

It's more likely that a scummy 'journalist' has taken advantage of the women by encouraging her to give a statement in order to produce a cheap story. We don't get to hear what the hack told her was in the episode.

There have been at least 4 films about the Titanic, not to mention its inclusion in numerous TV progs over the years (were there objections when Upstairs Downstairs featured it in an episode? I expect not).

What I remember Milvana Dean was supportive of James Cameron's 1997 film - so I suspect she's probably been quoted out of context.

It cant be as bad when the yanks turned it into a love story - wich they seem to do to every thing. they even managed to do it with Jack the Ripper!

"Titanic 2 - Jacks return" Ooo major blockbuster!
"From Hell 2.1 - My love affair with Jack"

Voyage of the Damned Its hardly ruining history, the americans did that.

still, surviors should have the right to criticise.

how can it be ruining history when it is set in space and nothing to do with the boat?

Ah, nearly Christmas, the country is winding down, Parliament is in recess, financial markets are closing - all adds up to a few slow news days. Time for some journo to stir the waters a bit.

I'm sure* she got a phone call that went something like this:

Journalist: Have you heard about the television programme going out on Christmas Day on BBC1 that uses the sinking of the Titanic as a backdrop for a story about monsters and aliens without paying any respect to those lost and their families. You lost family too didn't you?

Millvina Dean: Yes. The Titanic was a tragedy which tore so many families apart. I lost my father and he lies on that wreck. I think it is disrespectful to make entertainment of such a tragedy.

Journalist: Thank you. *click*

Mmmm yes, I seem to remember the BBC showing James Cameron's Titanic as part of their Christmas line up a couple of years ago, without complaint. That film was not a factual representation of events, and therefore I'd think would have more reason to be criticised by survivors and family members!

I totally agree, this poor elderly lady has probably had the wool pulled over her eyes by some journo. the only similarities that have become apparent from trailers are
Spoiler
that both "ships" are called Titanic and both are destroyed (or part destroyed)

Absolutely ludicrous!!

I think anybody who survived the Titanic has every right to feel offended.
They may be an extreme minority, but they feel what they feel.
I have full respect for their opinion.

Obviously I don't share their opinion as it didn't affect me, but I fully respect their opinion. It's not for me to say that their opinion is wrong or anything.

How can I state that their opinion is 'ludicrous' or be in any place to criticise their opinions if they were there and I wasn't?

I have no doubt that this woman was duped, and was not informed that this does not feature "The" Titanic.

Why was no-one offended by the Kenneth More film (A Night To Remember), or the James Cameron Titanic (which really did use artistic licence in the name of cinematic entertainment)?

Personally I think the poor woman was mislead and misquoted by the journalist.

I wasn't referring at any time to the opinions of Titanic survivors or their relatives as being ludicrous, alrightmate. I was referring to the "news" story published, and the fact that the BBC had on previous occasion showed the film Titanic, which is a ficticious version of events of the ACTUAL disaster, rather than just using the name of the ill-fated ship.
I don't think my post showed any disrespect to the opinions of Titanic survivors or their relatives and I apologise if it came across as such.

Just wondering how you can complain about something without having seen it.

The obvious arguement is this isn't the real Titanic, but even if it was, it could have been handled completely sensitively and been a moving piece.

No-one (except the production team) knows what it's going to be like until Christmas Day.....then we can all complain!

Fortunately, we live in the multichannel age, so the poor woman can watch a nice respectful film instead:

lol! Now that does disrespect the Titanic. One day, the Titanic will probably be thought of myth and there will be loads more films about it.
I respect the survivors opinion but i do believe they were probably mislead and misquoted. We might expect that the lady in question will find another journo and say she was misquoted.

Perhaps The BBC should hold a Seance to see if any more victims of the disaster have complaints

It's a shame none of the Titanic survivors complained about the 1997 James Cameron film that concentrated on mostly only two (fictional) passengers and their insipid love story. Instead of the one and a half thousand (ish) that lost their lives
The Oracle

Titanic was 3 hours long, of which it spent a lot of time focusing on characters besides the two "star-crossed" lovers (for example, the captain, the architect, the Irish immigrants, etc.).

And although it skims over parts, like when they stopped off in Ireland, it's pretty accurate and it doesn't glorify the deaths of the passengers for entertainment. Also, the film's makers made an accompanying feature-length documentary (Ghosts of the Abyss).

This DW episodes however is purely for entertainment. They even have the same disasters happen (in this case the ship is hit by a meteorite, instead of an iceberg).

I think at least one family had the right to complain about the 1997 film

from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McMaster_Murdoch

Quote:
“Several members of the crew, including the ship's lamp trimmer, Samuel Hemming, and Second Officer Charles Lightoller said they saw Murdoch hard at work attempting to free Collapsible A from the falls on the Boat Deck just before the bridge submerged in the final stages of the sinking, when a huge wave washed him overboard into the sea. Surviving wireless operator Harold Bride later stated that he saw Murdoch nearby Collapsible Lifeboat "B," but that he died in the water.

In his home town of Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland there is a memorial to his heroism and a charitable prize has been established in his name.”

Quote:
“In the 1997 film, it depicted Murdoch taking — but later rejecting — a bribe from first-class passenger, Caledon Hockley, and shooting two third class men dead after they tried to enter a lifeboat. After this, Murdoch salutes Chief Officer Henry Wilde and commits suicide. Studio executives later flew to Murdoch's hometown to issue an apology for this depiction to his surviving relatives.”

To be honest I have a very horrible feeling that poor woman's quote has been taken completely out of context by an a**hole Journalist just looking for any news story out of his/her boredom.
