I love it. The chances of getting CJD are really slim anyway and it hasn't put me off

Haven't eaten beef since 1988. Won't ever eat it again.

Me.

It's ever since they said it had 'mad cow disease'. Although it's gone, I still haven't had it yet. Don't ask me why!

That was just another one of our Government's scare stories, along with Salmonella and Bird Flu to name but two.

I remember a vegetarian getting CJD and the Government trying to spin it.

I'm a fish eating veggie (pescatarian or whatever the word is, if your fussy about it) and although I don't miss meat, Christmas has been lousy without the waft of Turkey and so on I usually have if I'm at a big family gathering (this year I had a small Christmas). TBH I have really missed all that, and it's not really felt like Christmas.

But part of the reason I gave up meat (over 12 yrs ago) was the risk of CJD. It's a bit like Northern Rock, the government says "don't worry" and the next day there's a stampede to take out cash. With Beef I think we were given assurances and yet we were heading into uncharted territory. I had a friend at work, and his brother died of CJD 5 years ago. That's scary isn't it? He wasn't very old either.

I think if I'd not already given it up, I'd be confident to eat it these days - but my Nan was always fussy about it - it had to M&S or a butcher she knew very well. The trouble for me, was when I used to eat it I don't think I was worried about the quality enough.

Is mechanically recovered meat still used? those are the words that send a shudder down my back. What awful junk, usually promoted at kids

I confuse restaraunts by requesting that my beef steaks are done 'Medium verging on the side of rare'. A friend of mine confuses them even more by then requesting that his is done blue (which a lot of places won't do to be honest).

It's better than chicken...

I've had a Blue Steak, although I wouldn't have one unless I was really confident on the origins of the meat.

I sometimes eat beef, but I quite often don't trust it, due to their being some darker than normal bits on some of the slices and a bitter taste in my mouth after I have eaten that darker part!

not had much beef since the BSE stuff.

even now, we check labels, and refuse anything with beef gelatine - mainly sweets etc.

I used to like it, but now confidence has completely gone, It's not just about CJD, it's more about the crap that is pumped into these animals, I just don't trust the food industry anymore..

I am getting tired of it too. Been happening a lot here. Food and Drink is losing its way, most threads nowadays belong in GC.

Yes because that CJD warning was so spot on as well.

When you talk of not trusting beef....you must surely be referring to minced beef!!!
After all, a steak or a roast joint is totally not going to be contaminated with horsemeat.

I both eat it and trust it, but there again I get it from a butcher. I wouldn't eat or trust a 99p Lasagne from Iceland though. I mean what do people who buy those things expect, finest quality minced organic steak?

No they don't. I doubt you'll find a single person who expects that, but you will find about 99% of people who expected them not to contain horse.

I don't know about the other poster but I find the BIB somewhat condescending.

I buy beef from my local butcher or sometimes Morrisons - they have their own abattoir and as they say can follow the food trail from field to fork.

I love beef, the rarer the better. Always order my steaks rare. Next time I'm in a half decent establishment eating steak, I'm going to try it blue.

I'm assuming the op means like in a joint of Beef, I wasn't talking about mince in general but a Beef Joint...If i was to trust a Butcher in which i don't....I don't trust supermarkets because when i pick up a joint of Beef Or Chicken when it say's Irish or British I expect it so, I don't Want meat coming from any old EU country....And i don't trust Beef or any other meat because I think it's Bad...

I take it you are referring to imported beef by your comment "it's more about the crap that is pumped into these animals"

As you won't find that with British Beef, as any form of growth hormone is banned in the Uk.

CJD? where is that these days? British beef is a safe product to eat and always was

Why don't you trust butchers or Beef?

And can you elaborate on your thinking "beef is bad"?

Yes I'm referring to imported Beef...

CJD, If you look at Minimalistmatt's post,Had a friend at work who's brother died 5 years ago, and a few weeks back on these forums a man lost his wife to CJD, So it is happening maybe not in the scale of millions everyday, maybe they just caught the disease in time and only a few will die,or it's not being broadcast so not to scare the public..

Why do i not trust butchers ,especially the one in my town, well a few years ago i ordered a Turkey for xmas, I thought i was getting a local Derbyshire bird, but i got a french one with this funny looking black mark imprinted on the skin, one the worst bird i ever had,if a butcher had to import turkeys what else is he importing,if he's doing it are all of them at? I paid for local and didn't get it..

Beef...Cancer experts say its bad, there is something in beef that causes cancer, can you remember chernobyl ,the fallout went all over the welsh mountains, cumbria, scottish hills, Radiation is still in the ground now.... My mum-in-law is dying of cancer her consultant told her to avoid eating beef amongst other things.
My husband had a conversation about cancer afew weeks ago with a workmate who comes from india, and he told him people from india never get cancer because they don't eat meat..
It depends in what you want to believe, over the past 10 years we've researched cancer and it all points to beef or meat...

I've loved beef still do, but no we don't trust it..
