Fully on rather than standby
RJD
22-12-2007
Hi All

I have set my 9200 to 'Power Off' (go into standby) at 1am and then cut power (by way of an external switch/timer) at 3am.

At 3pm power switches on (it goes into standby) and at 4pm it is set to 'Power On'.

Is it possible to get the 9200 to come on fully, rather than go into standby, when power switches on (at in my case 3pm)?

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks

Why not set the external timer to 14:59 and the auto power on to 15:00?

Perhaps I misunderstood the question

I have to ask, why do it at all? If it's to save electricity, it may be false economy. It uses 10 watts or less in standby. What powers your external timer?

you can set it to come on fully at any time you want so you could set it to come out of standby at any time after 3pm, I'd make it 3.15 to allow for inaccurate timer switches.

If you realy want it to come on fully at 3pm you'll have to set the external timer to come on at 2.45 or 2.40, again to allow for inaccurate switching.

When power is applied the humax goes into the mode it was in before the power was removed, so it you leave it operational until you cut the power, it will come on when power is restored.

Thanks for your replies.

BBinBucks - I'm just trying to avoid the extra wear and tear of it coming on/standby/on.

I tried setting the timer/switch on to before power on but it doesn't work (see gtg's reply).

I already had the timer which is LCD and as such uses next to no electricity.

As I only watch TV in the evening I would prefer not to have it on/standby 24/7.

redrob2 - The actual time is not the point. I'm just trying to avoid the extra wear and tear of it coming on/standby/on.

gtg - Would it do any harm or cause extra wear and tear if I just used my external switch/timer to power it on/off and NOT set 'power on' or 'power off'' times in the Humax?

Do you all leave your 9200 on (or standby) 24/7?

Yeah, it can't record programmes when it's turned off! As it's too noisy when on, it is in standby most of the time.

Hi kev

Mine is very quiet (it's over two years old) and the earliest program I record is Click 3.30pm on Sundays.

I may go back to leaving it on/standby as it's survived ok so far and I know it's not a good idea to keep turning HDD on and off.

EDIT - I only started to use the external timer when I noticed the Humax display was getting dimmer, particularly the time, and thought it might be a good idea to prolong it's life by turning it off overnight/afternoon.

Leaving it on 24/7 should be best for reliability as power cycling causes thermal cycling which along with start up surges for the psu and hard drive promote componant failure.

Most modern hard drives will run continuously for many years. We have drives reaching 10 years or more, with almost all of the failures we see occurring after shutdowns.

Powering down during operation does not seem to harm the Humax file system, perhaps because error detection is disabled so it depends how environmentally friendly you want to be.....

Hi gtg

I agree but I don't leave my computer on 24/7 as I reasoned that as long as it was off for around the same time it was normally on (i.e on around 12 hours off around 12 hours) it would be ok and save the 100watts its uses on standby (only gfx and monitor powered down).

With the Humax it's not so clear cut as it only uses around 7watts on standby and used/viewed for around 6/7 hours a day.

Will the display stop fading at some point or will it eventually be unreadable?

We don't have a significant window to shut down the humax for any length of time and 24/7 avoids any epg issues.

Some PVRs don't shut off much in standby saving only 2 watts or so anyway.

As for the display already I have some degradation on some digit elements, but that doesn't bother me, I can live without "channe" on the front.

Hi

Hard drives are normally rated for around 50,000 start/stop cycles, this will easily outlast the lifetime of the Humax.

Modern electronic components are not affect by turning off and on so there should be no problems at all.

Thanks for that PhilipL.

So I might as well keep things as they are.

Thanks everyone for your input.
