Samsung Plasma Problem
willfy

Hi

Hope someone can help me with this problem.

I have has s Samsung PS42Q7HD plasma for about a year and had no probs. Really pleased with it.

Earlier this month my Sky+ Amstrad box died so I bought a four month old Thomson 160GB setup off Ebay. Set it up and I thought all was great until I tried playing back some recordings.

For some reason on playback only the screen flicks on and off and the sound disappears. This only seems to happen when there is bright colours or something moving slowly on the screen. If I rewind and play again it always does it in the same place.

Initially I thought the Skybox was faulty but I have tried another TV and it's fine. It only happens on the Samsung. I have adjusted the settings in the picture menu (dynamic, contrast etc). I have been into the engineers menu to try and turn off DNIE but it doesn't seem to be in the menu.

If anyone has any ideas what could be causing it I would be very grateful. It's driving me nuts

Have you tried subing the connecting scart cable, could be dud connection in one of the ends effecting pin 8 or earth grounding, hope it aint the latter, get back to us a let us know!

Yeah, tried new leads in both scarts sockets. Had the sky box in PAL and RGB. Makes no difference.

Here's a fly one, try tuning in the boxes modulated r.f. output 2, if it tunes in and the picture is fine & stable, it could be a video sync problem between the t.v. & the plus box, rare but not unheard of.

You say it happens on playback at certain time points, and not with "off air" channel viewing?

It only happens when I playback recordings from the sky box and always at the same position of the recording.

For example I like to record a program on overseas property which is on in the afternoon called property kings (boring for most but I like property). At the begining of the program there is picture of a crown. For some reason it always flicks when that picture comes up.

I recorded the friday night project yesterday and the whole thing was unwatchable. Flicked everytime girls aloud were on

Normal viewing (not recorded) is perfect.

Cool we're on the same page, have you tried the R.F. opition yet? I had a Sagem LCD that had a sync prob with a Sagem freeview box (How f*cking stupid is that!) as well as other stuff. Using the R.F. output will clear up whether the issue is to do with video blanking, etc from the Thomson end of things. Girls Aloud you say? Surprised the box didn't detonate itself?

I will try the RF output later. The misses is watching the box at the moment.

If the other t.v. you tried was a CRT, this dosn't rule out the Thomson box, as CRT's are alot more forgiving to dingy incoming signals, a CRT will make a good picture out of bad CAT 5 compared to an LCD or Plasma which even with a good CAT 5 signal can have a "soft" or grainy believe me!

Ok, the other TV was an LCD, but only a portable.

Have now disconnected the scarts and just using the RF output. The picture is now ok and not flickering at all

What's the difference between using the RF as opposed the scart?

With the R.F. modulater, because its just a UHF signal you don't have to worry about the composite sync, video blanking for both composite & RGB, and colour seperations that you have to with a fully wired SCART. If Girls Aloud are fine on that recording, apart for being a thick as pig sh*t, then it really is time to look towards the video board in the Thomson, the last bit of diagnostics I would have you do is to go to your local ASDA or pound shop and buy a BASIC i.e. STANDARD scart non 21 pin wired! In ASDA they sell one for 97p in clear p.v.c. bag branded Electro or some thing like that (I'm pretty sure that is the name.) connect this and try it (Switch to "video" on the Sky box!!) if the problem is still there, then its time to kill the fly c*nt that sold it to you I'm affraid by means of blugen with the afore mentioned Sky box, that and or find an independent sat dealer you can trust and get the unit repaired. Get back to us with your progress mate.

You could also try a full system reset on your Thomson (A total shot in the dark, but hey) to see if this resolves it. Just do the following.

Remove the plug from the mains.
Hold LEFT & RIGHT buttons (ON THE UNIT, NOT REMOTE)
Put the plug back in the mains & wait for "RING" to light
When it lights release LEFT&RIGHT buttons & press SELECT
The RING cycles backwards while disk is quick formatted.
If format is sucessful PLAY lights up, if not RECORD lights up.
The box goes into standby - wait 30 seconds and then wake it up by pressing the SKY button on your REMOTE this time.

Please note mate that this will scrub all your recordings & erase all "series links".

Any luck with standard scart, system reset? It would be cool if it was a software issue with Macrovision or some thing (But that would effect the R.F. output aswell) let us know any ho, Merry Christmas mate.

The RF output is now doing the same. Have done a full reset and no difference.

Contacted the person I bought it off on Ebay and he has refunded me and told me to keep it. He says if it's faulty it's no good to him. Sounded quite straight and refunded quickly so I don't think he was trying to tuck me up.

Thanks for all your help. I think I will get myself a Pace model after Xmas and have done with it.

That's good to hear mate, I think Thomson stuff is going down hill real fast, I've got the Anytime receiver, a true bit of s*ite more bugs than a dodgy chinese carry out shop, poor internal design, and guess what a dodgy video board! but only a juddering effect every 30 seconds or so! Wouldn't fancy one of there Sky HD boxes for nowt, let alone for £300! (Best bit inside was the Seagate 160 Gig hard disk, now sold on, glad I didn't pay for the unit!)
