I think it depends what you're cooking. I think a lot of people have had experiences of bad food done in fryers, horrible greasy stuff.
I bought a fryer a couple of years ago (purely to try and do Heston Blumenthals chips). I don't use it a lot but if I've time it's worth it for the chips alone. So much better than normal chips or oven chips. You can do nice beer battered onion rings and things like that too.
If you put the effort in the food isn't greasy, plus my fryer is so easy to drain and clean, not like they used to be.
