No it wasn't off. I had it changed when they put another barrel on and it was just as bad. they may have changed the recipe now as the brewery is in different hands I believe.
And while I'm here I remember Burtonwood Bitter from the 70's that was rank too.

Does anyone in the North West remember Greenall Whitley? They used to brew in Warrington but stopped in 1991.

Now known as the De Vere Group

I used to live near one of their pubs and only remember them for bland insipid keg.

I used to live in Horwich and now Bolton and at one time you couldn't move for Greenalls pubs. Going back to the 70's Greenalls was a great pint if it was looked after. The Greenwood in Horwich served the best pint of Greenalls bitter I ever had. The worse was the Crown Hotel.

Oh I use to love Greenalls bitter and Original in cask.

Cant stand Bud, Carling, Stella or anything else that pretends its made somewhere exciting but is in fact made in Watford.

Tesco value lager. You might as well just drink coloured water.

Yeah, Im not a fan of beers made under licence, the whole point of a lot of drinks is that the water at source is different to somewhere else. Although I'm not sure Carling claims to be made anywhere exciting.

If you want to try something a bit different, is there a shop dedicated to the local polish community in your area?

There is one not too far from me selling a range of polish bottled beers, the prices are not excessive. I bought a bottle of ZYWIEC - POKAZ JEZYK and will try it over the weekend. They have some others I will try over the next few weeks and a range of polish food and other products you don't find in british shops.

www.zywiec.com.pl I think the first page is asking if you are over 18 so click on "tak" for yes, the next page seems very slow to load.

I've had some fab food from polish supermarkets. Not a big beer drinker tho. Have noticed some strange beers in home bargains from time to time, cheap prices and maybe worth a go

A local off license near me used to sell Tatra pils, brewed by monks in the Tatra mountains in Poland. It was a lovely drink but that was 20 years ago so I do'nt know if it's still available.

Edited to say: Googled it and it's still available. But now brewed by Heineken and the reviews are poor.

You see that's what happens when global brewers can't sell their crappy products in other markets as the locals think they are shit. They buy, or buy into the local brewer so they get their money somehow. They also have a bad reputation for changing the production methods usually for the worse.

Some examples :-

Czech Republic :-
Pilsener Urquell (owned by SAB Miller)
Krusovice (owned by Heineken)
Staropramen (soon to be owned by Molson Coors)

Germany (Munich)
Spaten/Franziskaner/Loewenbrau (owned by AB Inbev)
Paulaner (49.1% owned by Heineken)

Avoid these brands as there are better products out there (e.g. Budweiser Budvar in the Czech Republic and Augustiner in Munich)..

Thank God Britain has a great brewing industry. Just avoid the mass produced shit.

lager ! how anyone can drink it is a mystery ??

There are a lot of beers I'd avoid, sometimes circumstance dictates I must lower my standards but I will NEVER drink Carling or Fosters.

Despite not owning any sandals, beard or beer belly I quite like good real ales, prefer them to lager these days.

I am partial to criminally strong Belgian beer too: Duval etc.

Apart from the odd badly kept pint, the worst beer I have ever drunk is Budweiser (UK version). It's got no flavour at all. It's beer for people who don't like beer

Its a shame that the UK can produce some amazing real ales, but we can't make a decent mass market lager
