I just watched the first episode of series 1, I know I’m a bit behind.
But did I miss something it seemed a bit lame/weak to me does it get any better?

I love Scifi stuff maybe Im just expecting to much. ?

It does get better yes. Give it a go, there are some good episodes in the series.

Like most series, the first few episodes are scene-setters, and not only are you getting used to the characters, but the actors are just getting into their roles.

It does improve.

There are very few shows that hit the ground running, it normally takes a series or two to settle down, for the writers and actors to find the characters etc.
Take Red Dwarf for example. No one could call the first series brilliant. I don't think it really found it's feet until series three. Buffy wasn't that good in series one either, or Star Trek:TNG. Likewise the Simpsons.
I'm hoping for better things from Torchwood this series...

No, it gets worse. The first episode garnered mainly positive reviews from critics and fans alike. That didn't last very long.

There's the occasional glimmer of quality, but it is, generally-speaking, subsumed under all the other awfulness.

Series 2 (starting in a couple of weeks), however, looks to be ace from the trailers, and early reviews are glowing.

Or in the case of Voyager - Season 8!

In my opinion, no it doesn't. I was just as disappointed as you were and went along with the optimism of the fans that it would improve but each week I only ended up disappointed on two counts - it was still weak and it hadn't improve either.

All together I feel that they simply didn't deliver the series they promised. Perhaps if they hadn't descibed it so poorly before it aired I wouldn't have ended up expecting something so different and would therefore not have been so disappointed, but either way I didn't like it very much. The annoying thing was that every now and again it would display a glimmer of hope, only to let you down in the end again. You'll see what I mean if you watch the whole series. Another annoying thing was the seemingly randomness of some elements. It was as though they were just throwing things into some stories for no real or coherent reason.

The trailer for the second series makes it look as though things have improved but it wouldn't be the first trailer from the Doctor Who people that I've found to be misleading in retrospect so who knows. I don't like the characters in it though (they're part of the overall weakness of the series - none of them are convincing as agents of a secret sinister organisation which operates 'beyond the UN'), so I don't see how better writing or production is going to help that. I found Jack a much less interesting character in this compated to Doctor Who, which you think would be wrong given the adult nature of the show should allow them to explore the character further and show other sides to him. He is the main character in it, not an occasional side kick.

I once saw it described as a sci-fi show made for adults by 14 year olds, and I feel that is exactly how it feels most of the time. Other people seemed to have loved it, but I just can't see why. I can only imagine that these are people who don't want anything too heavy or want to worry about plot holes or discontinuity. Like people who love soap operas but think proper dramas are rubbish. Or love Big Brother but can't see the point in ITV's 'Up' series.

I thought the series was brilliant- I mean I did prefer it to Dr.Who, more grown up (I know that is the main premise but thought I would mention!)
There are a couple of slow, maybe boring episodes but there are some very good highlights and I just can't wait till series 2.
By the looks of this thread, the ad looks good, I have not seen it yet... going to check it out now

Around half the episodes were great IMO (highlights including episode 1, the fairies one, Cuntrycide, They Keep Killing Suzie, Captain Jack Harkness (first part of the finale)) A few dodgy ones, mainly it seems because they didn't know exactly what tone to go for. Despite it featuring 'adult' content like swearing (ooh!) blood and sex it wasn't really adult at all.

It has it's moments (They Keep Killing Suzie and Combat ) but no generally series 1 wasn't that good at all... especially Chris Chibnall's episodes.

The main problem (a part from the lack of any disernable plot in most episodes beyond gratuitous sex and violence) were the characters. They didn't get on or gel like a team at all, the most likeable characters (Ianto and Tosh) got hardly any development whilst Gwen was overexposed and turned out to just be a bit selfish and miserable and very far from the supposed 'heart' of the series that she was meant to be. Also as someone said they were completly and utterly incompetent and very unbelievable as a secret organisation (expecially Gwen... I have no idea how she was even a police officer she was that usless).

Series 2 does look like it's going to be a big improvment though.

No it wasn't. That's the problem with it - it was just juvenile. Doctor Who is a far more grown up programme. Come to that, with its dealings with divorce and Alzheimer's, The Sarah Jane Adventures is a more grown up programme than Torchwood was.

Swearing and seeing shagging and blood do not make something "grown up".

We were a bit disappointed with Torchwood series one. It was frustrating because it had so many good elements but didn't really know what to do with itself.

I think when Capn Jack came back into Doctor who at the end of season 3 you really saw how good his character should have been throughout Torchwood, but wasn't!

Lots of good ideas and characters which never really settled into anything good. And don't get us started on the cyber lady and her cyber pants! Tchk!

it's still worth a watch though.

And, oh my! How about the trailers for season 2? Hubba hubba! James Marsters AND John Barrowman kicking ass! If the beeb can't make that combination a success then they're really rubbish!

(Oh and Jim Robinson from Neighbours!)

I loved it, I didn't watch it the first time round, I have just watched the whole series on BBC Three, and I cannot wait for when series 2 starts. I absolutely love Capt Jack, but I equally loved Owen as well. In my opinion I would keep watching and then you can make up your own mind if you like it or not

I thought series 1 was brilliant - and even better upon watching again recently when I got the DVD. I think the only episode I wasn't so keen on was 'Random Shoes' but I've still got that one to watch again yet.

I think it works perfectly both for people who love Doctor Who and those that don't.

As mentioned above Tosh and Ianto don't get much of a look in in series 1 but the episode 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' is Tosh's finest hour and just shows what a wonderful character she can potentially become.
