Yes how dare people enjoy themselves! The nerve of some people, they should be sobbing into their eggnog like 99% of the miserable DS readers out there.

The spring is usually the time of the year with the highest suicide-rate. Something to do with sudden increased amount of light, sounds absurd but that is the case.

I believe May is the peak time...apparently because the lighter evenings 'energise' suicidal people into action (amongst other factors).

Ironic that a partial relief from depression can actually make it more life-threatening.

On the contrary - you have only to come on this forum this fine Christmas morn to see that it is NOT the season to be jolly at all. The forum this morning is full of people having a horrendous time and not "enjoying themselves" one bit. It's worse than Eastenders.

It is only just gone 11 am but already families are in turmoil - dads have declared themselves gay and taken back the presents, Christmas dinners have been cancelled. Fights have broken out. Boyfriends and husbands have upset older family members. Others have locked themselves in their rooms. Sisters are at war with one another. etc etc,

Whatever your cicumstances there are obviously many a lot worse - so cheer up!

The suicide rate doesn't go up over Christmas. Here's an article on that particular urban myth.

It's illusory. I'm not convinced anyone really enjoys themselves at Christmas. Indeed, I would venture to say that you are better off on your own.

Those on their own often feel lonely, those with families and relatives often feel very stressed and ill.

Which is worse, or both equally as bad ?

Not at all depressing in fact, provided you live somewhere like Australia, New Zealand or Florida.

I don't find Christmas day depressing, just pretty boring really.

That's why I tend to drink the day away!

Contrary to the popular belief that suicide rates are highest around Christmas, it's actually January. Also in summer when the temperature goes up significantly, there's always a 4% increase in suicides because the heat makes people irritable.

The problem with Christmas is that it is a massive, overblown build-up and when the day comes it largely goes flat. It's great for the kids and I think if you have them then it can be great fun for the adults too. Also, if you have a big family that you enjoy being with, then that helps to. But for a lot if us it just really falls flat. Personally, I am not depressed or anything about it - I am enjoying the day off, and have dinner and then Doctor Who to look forward to. But after that it will be back to business and I am looking forward to my holiday in the sun in January.

I think you've got it in one, Its the big build up and expectations set to high, I'm not depressed either just fed up with it. TV is rubbish, kids playing up leading to the wife running around with a face like a smaked arse, I just wish it was boxing day

Maybe it's not Christmas that is bothering you but having a wife and children?

I think i'll be depressed when Christmas is over I don't want it to end. I'm thinking of pretending that tomorrow is Christmas Day 2 so I get two Christmasses. I have the day off tomorrow and have nothing better to do!

Yep can definitely identify with that today..... Spent most of the day in tears as it is....Only laughter in our house came during the Queen's speech when she said something along the lines of "I hope all those out there who have lost someone close to them this year find strength and comfort in their families." Yeah right....me and my mum have been shunned by ours despite it being the first Christmas since my dad died..... my sister is too busy fawning over the "Golden Goose" (her father in law aka 'The Bank of Grandad' ) to give us the time of day.... in fact they all lost interest when they realise my father didn't have life insurance so therefore no big payout

I just hope I'm not here next year

Taking an overdose solves nothing, it's usually a cry for help.

If you wanted to commit suicide, I'm sure you'd have found a way, however, if it was a cry for help, there are numerous organisations out there to assist you, I suggest you make use of them

Good luck
