Alright I've strayed to the darkside of iPods (no comments about getting a Sony or Zen... I've decided to go with the flow... plus the Sony I had was a nightmare!)

I can either get:

New Apple iPod Nano, 4GB, Silver - £99
New Apple iPod Nano, 8GB, Silver/Black - £129
New Apple iPod Classic, 80GB, Silver/Black - £159

I've not got a huge music collection, at the moment I'm using my Sony Ericsson for music. But I like the idea of podcasts automatically updating etc so decided it was time to return to an MP3 player.

I don't want to spend more than the above, and I want to use my John Lewis vouchers. I guess I'm wise to wait for the sales, but obviously need to think ahead.

Is there anything quirky or better about any of the above makes? I don't think 4GB would be worth the money, but at the same time whilst the £159 models look appealing I'd never use all that up nor do I want something so big?

Apologies if anything here doesn't make sense. Wine is flowing... Merry Christmas

I'd say a ipod nano. ipod touches are good if you'd use the internet on a ipod but i think they are a bit too big. ipod nano's are alot smaller and easier to take out/etc..

I've purchased the 8GB as a Christmas present for someone, when I spoke to the sales guy in the Apple store, it seemed the 8GB served the purpose.

If you have a previous ipod and live near an apple store, Apple will give you 10% trade in on any new ipod.

I got an iPod classic today and it's amazing.

Used to have a 2GB nano, I loved it but it was too small; with the 80GB I have 1500 songs at double compression rate and it's only 1/8 full.

I honestly don't know why people slate iPod's so much. There's a reason why it's the market leader by 65%.

Sorry I am going to mention a Zen. I've got a 60GB Zen Vision, and with a subscription to Napster it means that I've hardly bought any CDs over the last year.

If you've got a compatible player (which Ipods aren't) you just pay a monthly fee instead of for individual downloads. It's saved me £100s this year already.

See, that depends how often you download music. Personally I like having the freedom of buying a song/album when I want to, not feeling obliged to because I have paid.

I will concur however that it can save you a lot of money.

Why the hell would anyone buy an ipod when the zen allows you to download independently, syncs with WMP and winamp, and the vision allows you to watch XVID, DVIX AVI, MPG etc movies straight off P2P.

It was just an example.

Also using p2p isn't illegal, downloading pirated copies of movies is illegal.

On that subject - I am also going to get a new iPod (old 512MB shuffle now seriously no use) but I don't want a classic iPod or one of the new nanos (don't like the silly video screen).

Where could I get one of the previous generation nanos from? And not eBay! Can't see any online. Perhaps a trip down Tottenham Court Road?

Yes, there is. It's called good marketing!

I got a 30GB iPod classic last summer and it's perfect for me. It's never got wrong (yet - touch wood!) and has been well worth the money. I really recomend one.

Unless they've changed the rules, as soon as you stop subscribing, you won't be able to play any of those songs any more.

I got the 160gb ipod classic from New York in September and I adore it, I had a Nano before but I just love being able to carry EVERYTHING I own with me where ever I go (31000 songs to date)

So my pick would be the classic

Yep, it's a toughie alright. I've still yet to make my mind up. Torn between the two.

I used t have a 60GB Zen. But it was very close to full. So when Apple brought out the 160GB I moved to the dark side and bought it.
While I'm not exactly an Apple fan boy, far from it, the classic serves my needs allowing me to have all my music where I go. I just don't see the point in 4GB players, waste of money. Go big you'll be surprised how quickly you can fill it up.

I'd recommend the 80GB. As other posters have said, you'll be surprised at how quickly you fill up a smaller one.

If at any point in the future you decide to put music videos or TV shows onto your iPod, the Nanos will fill up very quickly as video files aren't small. I feel that the 80GB is probably better value- it's only £30 more expensive than the 8GB Nano and you get ten times the amount of storage I've had an 80GB 5.5g iPod since last year and never thought I'd use all that space, but there's only about 10GB worth of space left.

I also feel that the 80/160GB models look much nicer than the new Nanos, although that is down to personal taste

I got a 4GB Nano for Christmas last year, and it's now nearly full I'm going have to strart deleting songs so I think I'mg oing to need to move to a new iPod with more space at some stage in 2008.
