I know I am going to get a bashing for this but I'm just wondering if anyone else is sick and tired of the cheesy, over the top speeches that The Doctor seems to make about himself every few episodes. All the 'I'm the Doctor....I'm 903 years old and I'm going to save you...' type of thing. Or even speeches by other people like 'He's The Doctor...he's fire and ice...and he's going to save us...'

I really find it's ruining the programme for me as it's just pushing into the realms of overly cheesy. I know Doctor Who isn't meant to be serious by any means and a huge part of it's appeal is that it's a tad silly but I cringe when the speeches and the posing start.

I liked his little speech myself, he came across as quite serious, rather than cheesy and put them in their place.

I'm bored with the ott speeches too. So many speeches of this kind seem to have no other purpose than to be used in trailers as when you see their context they don't seem right.

The worst speechifying bit for me is the now obligitory bit where the doctor has to comment on the fact that he isn't god and sometimes good people die and bad people live. I didn't watch the confidential prog but I can just picture a certain scripwriter saying how he loves Who because the doctor isn't god and sometimes good people die and bad people live and so in case the viewers haven't understood from watching the episode that the doctor isn't god and that sometimes good people die and bad people live he cunningly wrote a really moving speech in at the end where the doctor says that he isn't god and sometimes good people live and bad people die.

PMSL!!! Well I'm glad I am at least not the only one to feel this way.

I've just noticed that I really prefer the episodes where there are no big speeches!!

In this particular case he was trying to reassure a group of people who who convinced they were about to die.

I'd say two things about this. First, it obviously helps if you're immersed in the show and believing in the situation and characters. If the show hadn't grabbed you then that kind of speech is not going to work the way it's supposed to.

Second, I think it would have had more impact and been more believable if it hadn't been used in the trailer. There was plenty of other suitable material to use for that. The first time I heard the speech I was a lot more impressed than the last time.

Well I can see your points and if I'm honest I really was not impressed with last night's episode. But I'm talking about the repitition of these speeches in similar situations over the course of the three series. It's just getting a bit for me. Still enjoying the show however, I just wish a different record would be played.

Yep, that's perhaps why it worked for me as well - sent a bit of a shiver down my spine.

I have to say i didn't like the speech bit last night - it seemed badly written to me as to me it didn't seem like the Doctor would say that or anyone else and i think DT did well with what he had. I liked the "He's the Doctor, he's fire and ice...' in FoB.
I think last night, it just didn't work. I think RTD was trying to hard to get that info in but it could have been worded so much better.

I like some of them, the VOTD one was a bit 'meh', he could have said something similar, but giving less information, for example why did he need to say he was 903? He could have just said 'I'm the Doctor,a Timelord and I'm going to save....' and so on.

I did like the 'fire and ice' speech

You have named two examples and as you say only one was by the Dr himself. How can that be too much in 3 series and 3 Xmas specials?

But to answer your question

No. Not me, I love them'

I look at the speeches as an element of a Dr Who programme, just like every pantomime will have a long legged woman dressed as a man. There are some things you just expect in life and The Doctor's OTT passionate speeches are one of 'the expected' items.

There were 7 of us watching VOTD on Christmas Day. Everyone was very quiet to hear the dr's speech, from a 7 year old up to a 88 year old. At the end a few people cheered and one even clapped. I would say in my small sampling his OTT speeches are very popular.
