Has anybody had any success in achieving 5.1 sound when using Blu-ray films via a PS3?

Currently my PS3 is connected via HDMI to my Sony LCD TV with the internal speakers switched off. The PS3 is then connected to my home cinema system via the digital optical out connection (fibre optic).

Just can't achieve any better than PCM 48kHz?????

Thanks in advance for any info.....

you need to go into settings on the ps3 and select what audio out types just tick the ones you want or what your AV system is compatable with
select Dolby Digital/DTS 5.1 options

also make sure audio is outputted via optical only

Fairly new to PS3 myself but have got the audio sorted I believe.

If you are wanting the HD audio formats and your amp is capable of playing them back, either 5.1 or 7.1, you will need to have the PS3 connected via HDMI, optical will only pass DD5.1/DTS/DD+.

You will need to have this connection set up correctly on both PS3/Home cinema system.

PS3 settings....

1) BD/DVD Settings > BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) > Linear PCM.

2) Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings > HDMI > Automatic - a listing will appear with all available sound formats, select enter.

3) AV Receiver, you will need to follow the user manual for this.

Watched Die Hard 4.0 last night and the sound via multichannel PMC was a delight, dynamic and very detailed.

Thanks for the help guy's but I'm still struggling really..

After managing to spend a bit of time today with both the AV receiver and PS3 settings it already looks like everything is as it should be........

My PS3 is connected via HDMI to my TV and via Digital optical to my AV receiver - amp (Please note the internal speakers on the TV are muted/off). The audio settings on the PS3 as stated below are selected to run on the Digital out (Optical) connection. In doing this I can only assume the HDMI lead is transmitting video only to the TV.

The audio settings for the PS3 are:-

BD/DVD Settings> BD Audio Output Format (HDMI & Optical Digital) are both set to Linear PCM. The only other option is bitstream..

Sound Settings> Audio Output Settings > Digital Out (optical) and I have the following formats selected:- DD 5.1, DTS 5.1, Linear PCM 2ch 44.1 kHz and Linear PCM 2ch 48kHz. The PCM options are greyed out and it won't let me untick....

Might buy a new HDMI Lead and connect from the PS3 to the AV Receiver (IN) and then from the AV Receiver (Out) to the TV and change the settings. See if that makes a difference. What do you think???????

To be honest I would be happy with DTS/ Dolby 5.1 if I could achieve it via the audio optical connection..

Thanks again..

You need to select 'Bitstream' to be able to replay DD5.1/DTS via optical - Optical can't carry multichannel PCM, it can only carry 2channel PCM.

Personally I would connect as above and select Linear PCM, this way you will be able to take advantage of all surround formats supported by the PS3. You would need to check that the receiver can actually pass multichannel PMC via HDMI first. Failing this just keep the optical connection and select 'Bitstream' via the settings menu.

Sometimes you need to select DD on the DVD being played also Robbie Williams Live at the Albert Hall for example.

Try a few different titles.

Also on the PS3 setup check the audio is set to optical out- Bitstream, then select DD 5.1 and DTS (if your amp supports it) and complete the settings.

Thanks alot guys that has worked a treat....

I am now enjoying Blu-Ray in DTS 5.1 rather than some poxy 2.Ch sound... I wasn't too sure about the Bitstream setting at first because it scare mongers you in saying "some portions will not be played".

How good are films done in Blu-Ray format?? They are class!!! The sound helps too...

I still might invest in another HDMI lead and connect as mentioned before.

Thanks again...

Only had time to watch two movies over the xmas period, Die Hard 4.0 and Happy Feet. Very pleased with the picture quality, but what's impressed me the most is the uncompressed PCM soundtracks, they are so dynamic and detailed, even the positioning of the FX are improved, sound placement is very accurate.

I would give the HDMI a go personally and get the most out of your amp/PS3, this is providing the amp is compatible to passing multi channel PCM via HDMI, pretty sure the manual will cover this.
