Has anyone else had problems with darker areas on LCD screens?

I have a Sony KDL40D3000, which gave superb pictures for about two months. The panel developed the fault of correct brightness on the right hand side, with a darker middle section and darker lines from the middle to the left.

I contacted the retailer via email, as the TV was purchased on-line. The TV was collected by a subcontractor of the retailer, who kept it for a week, returned it with a story that the software had been updated (funny how it had the same software number then). Needless to say, it was exactly the same as when it went. I then contacted Sony (Not very much help), who arranged for me to take the TV to a local 'Sony approved service centre' (12 miles away) as Sony don't pay for logistics. They told me the LCD driver was faulty, kept the TV for 2 weeks and replaced the LCD panel only (even put down on the repair ticket that a loan set had been provided. Which it hadn't). Had the TV back for about 2 weeks. It was just the same. Contacted Sony again who told me to contact the second repairer again. The second repairer then told me they would order the LCD power supply and collect the set to fit it when said component arrived. The TV has been delivered back to me, only took three days in total, but the fault is still there. It isn't as pronounced as before, and is only noticeable on white or very light colours, but still there. A friend has a Wharfedale 42", although the picture quality is sub-standard (in my opinion), there is no shading.

Am I being over picky?

Thanks for looking,

John.

Some screens do have shading, my 22" LG does a little bit but not enough to be annoying.

Personally I'd go and see some of these models in stores and see how they compare to yours.

I have used avforums before so I've posted on there as well.

Today have been shopping (dragged out by the wife ) and I looked at other LCD panels, from the ONN in ASDA to the Panasonic's, Sony's and JVC's etc., and non of them displayed the same symptoms as mine, so may contact Sony again tomorrow.

Thanks,

Looks like a backlight fault to me, either tube array or invertor. Definitely panel/backlighting, not signal/processing. What do you reckon Nigel?

Betamax_man, does it change as you alter the brightness?

Can't see it, as I'm not registered there - but any backlight/inverter fault will usually shut the entire set down.

There have been some mods for some Sony sets for 'banding', I'll see if that's a listed one at work tomorrow.

Could it be dust or smoke inside the LCD panel?, I've changed one for that so far.

No, it seems to be the same at all brightness levels. Thanks for replying.

Regards,

John.
