Tom Tom Map Correction
SEG1
27-12-2007
I have just been bought a TomTom 520T Sat Nave as a Christmas present - but I live on a new estate which isn't on the installed map ( I have downloaded the updated map).

The device does have a map correction facility for adding new road - but none of the attempts which I have so far made to add my estate to the maps have worked.

I have read on the internet that I should be able to just walk down the new street, and it will be added to the map, but I can't find how to do this. The instructions don't seem to help, and there is nothing on the TomTom website.

Can anybody help me ?

Thanks

It ain't that simple!

There is a menu item called Map Corrections (or words to that effect - don't have my unit in front of me at the moment). That leads to a series of other options where you can make corrections, including Missing Roads which is the one you want.

This takes you to a map view where you can mark the start and end points of the road, though how you add things like bends I have not yet sussed! But don't expect the corrections to magically appear. I have corrected a few errors to roads and so far nothing has changed on my maps. So one does wonder if the Map Share feature actually does anything.

For instance there is a mini-roundabout I drive round every working day that was not on the map. I corrected that weeks ago, sent the correction off to TomTom, downloaded several Map Share updates. It is still missing, as is the slip road between the A404 north and the M40 north at High Wycombe I also sent. Though curiously when ever I go that way the TomTom seems to ignore the big roundabout there completely and tell me to take the exit then take the motorway. So it sort of knows there is a direct route missing out the roundabout but isn't too sure where it is as it still shows me going round the roundabout even though I'm driving through a field as far as the map is concerned!

Thanks for the reply. I had got this far and sent reports of missing roads, but nothing changed on my maps. I also identified the problem about bends in the road. Seems strange that this feature has been added and is heavily advertised - but there are no instructions on what to do and/or what should happen once a correction report has been made.

At least I now know there is nothing obvious that I am missing.

Thanks again.

Thewre are a few options that you can set regarding what Mapshare changes you display (and download)

i) Corrections I made myself
ii) Corrections verified by TomTom
iii) Corrections from trusted sources (whatever they are!)
iv) Corrections reported by many
v) Corrections reported by some

I have both the first two options ticked. Doesn't seem to make any difference whatsoever to what I see on the maps.

I would have assumed that the first one (your own corrections) would have displayed come what may, who knows how long it takes for TomTom (or more likely Tele-Atlas) to verify them.

Looking at a couple of the TT forums, it does seem that there is an opinion that Mapshare is a bad or flakey implementation at the moment, a good idea but needs more work (as if it's still in Alpha or Beta test phase).

I didn't think the TomTom maps list mini-roundabouts? I've never seen one on there - it just treats them like a normal junction, with give-way lines each side of the main road.

It does. There are several mini-roundabouts on my journey into work all of which except one are shown on the TomTom.

As you can see in my profile I live in Reading. Go into the Browse Map option and then Find then Addresss and select Crossing or intersection. Start with Reading Bath Road RG7 and then the Crossings, Circuit Lane and Honey End Lane for just two examples. It shows them as round dots in the map but if you plot a route along that stretch of road you will see the TomTom flags them up as roundabouts.

Can someone advise me on how to actually correct a map? My road is over 6 years old, but TomTom only says it goes to number 25 - it actually goes to number 68.

I just cannot seem to see how to do it - I have downloaded the latest map

If by this you mean add a new section of road. You can't.

Anything that involves re-drawing the map cannot be directly corrected. You can use MapShare to "correct" the error, ie indicate the start and end points of the missing bit of road, but you will only ever see the correction if or when TomTom udate the entire map.

If however the road does exist on the map and it is just the addresses that are missing then I'm not sure you can do anything about that with MapShare. If you search trough the TomTom website there is an e-mail address you can send map corrections to. Again whether they take any notice or not is entirely down to TomTom

Me too, the big roundabout by shire hall leading to shinfield road is still showing as 2 little ones, which changed over 4 years ago. Tesco in kings meadow doesn't show up, the road ends before it on the map. I know it's been there for well over 6 or 7 years?

They need to do some serious updating in this area. They claim I have the most up to date map, but many of the roads which are many years old don't show up, where as my 4 year old Garmin has them on it, and I've never updated it since I bought it. I thought I was upgrading with a tomtom one, but I'm not so sure now.

If the mapshare could help that would be good, or if tom tom would just add in a map which is less than 4 years old...

I'll contact them, hopefully it will have some effect.
