The Six Degrees of Doctor Who
Mulett
27-12-2007
Watching TV over the Christmas period, it really struck me just how many people have links to or have starred/appeared in Doctor Who.

Eastenders has quite a few links now (not just including Barbara Windsor from the Cyberman episode) and Ballet Shoes had at least two key actors from Who (Yasmin Paige and Marc Warren).

Its getting to be a bit like that Kevin Bacon game - that any show is only six degrees away from Doctor Who.

Not forgetting the Wombles... But they'll need a few more american actors to get some easier connections to US tv shows.

There are already connections to Buffy/Angel and Desperate Housewives. There's a six degrees link to Ugly Betty with David Tennent in the Extras Christmas special.

I guess David Warner gives a link to Trek and that's an entrance to everything with very few degrees.

Is it time to start a "Kevin Bacon for Doc 11" thread yet?

Michelle Collins (Cindy Beale) was the Captain in 42. June Brown (Dot Cotton) was in The Time Warrior - but that was 12 years before Eastenders.

Hugh Quarshie from Holby appeared in Star Wars - The Phantom Menace (Captain Panaka) as well as Dr Who - Daleks In Manhattan - Solomon.

I find it fascinating looking for actors who have appeared in both the classic series and the new series, there are 19 in total -
Spoiler
Daphne Oxenford
Anne Reid,
William Thomas,
Nisha Nayar,
Elizabeth Sladen,
John Leeson (as K9),

Roger Nott,
Geoffrey Palmer,
Clive Swift,
David Warwick,
Christopher Benjamin,
Trevor Laird,

and Louis Mahoney

And of course not forgetting Bernard Cribbins who was in The 1966 film with Peter Cushing and VOTD and is also in Series 4

Great news. Glad to hear the role of bloke selling newspapers is going to be integral to the new season.

Any ideas why Geoffrey Palmer is still on TV so much at the age of 80?

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a great actor with a marvellous voice, it's just that you'd think at his age, he'd be slowing down a bit. I suppose it's because he still gets the offers, but he must be rich enough not to need to work now.

Heh, don't underestimate ol' Bernard!

Re Urban Bassman's list, with 'Time Crash' included, you've got Peter Davison as well!

Regards,

Cypher

There's also Jo Joyner (Tanya) who played Lynda with a 'Y' in Bad Wolf/Parting Of The Ways

You can now add Jessica Martin to that list. She played Mags in Greatest Show In The Galaxy and supplied the voice of the Queen in Voyage Of The Damned.

In both cases a potential werewolf...

Probably the money didn't factor into it. Most actors would rip off their right arm for a place in DW - it will also no doubt go down well with his grandkids for grandpa to be in one of the most watched and popular shows on TV.

What did
Spoiler
Christopher Benjamin
play in the new series? Or has he not been shown yet?

I met him once at the Barbican Centre, but it was at a time when he was in an advert & all I could think of was the ad's catchphrase 'yoghurty shmoghurty'.

Also CE's connection to the cast of Heroes. Lots of possibilities there too.

Are you refering the Buffy/Angel link being James Marsters in Torchwood? For if that is the case, we already have a direct link to Ugly Betty with Alan Dale being in the new series of Torchwood

Also, there is an indirect link between Doctor Who and the old american 80s soap Dallas - can anyone guess what it is??

Also Anthony Head from Buffy was in School Reunion.

Also Martin Jarvis was in Vengeance on Varos and recently appeared on Stargate Atlantis with Amanda Tapping which also provides the link with Stargate SG1

Hmm, bit stumped by that one. When you say indirect link I presume you mean an actor from Doctor Who and an actor from Dallas worked together on another production?

Geoffrey Palmer was the admiral in Tommorow never dies with Desmond Lleweyn who was Q in You only live twice. Blofeld was played by Donald Pleasence in the same film. Pleasence also played Himmler in the eagle has landed and that also featured Larry "JR" Hagman as a US army officer.

Well, thats not the link I was on about - its a much simpler one....

John Barrowman starred in a American Soap called 'titans' also in the soap was Victoria principal - Pamela Ewing in Dallas!
Mansun

Ah, I thought it would most likely be John Barrowman providing the link.
