Series link - how?

Have searched the forum but did not find this. I have just upgraded my firmware to v20, but can't find how to activate the series link function. Is it because I still have -2 min padding at the beginning and +3 min at the end? If I remove these and replace with AR, will a series link button appear?

Yes, you cannot use auto padding with SL - what a stupid move......... but then you may well miss the ends/starts of programs........sigh.

Surley the whole point of a series link is that it works from the station signal when the programme is transmitted, i.e. if they broadcast on a Tuedsay instead of the regular Friday you should not miss any of the programme

It's two different systems.

Accurate recording only comes into play once the program is set in the schedule. Accurate recording is suppose to fine tune the start and end times in real time, it only caters for an up to 10 minutes early start.

Series link is using different data, and comes into affect after the recording has completed, what ever method that was. Series link works by searching the EPG for the next occurrence of an ID that indicates the program is the next one in the series then sets the timer schedule for you. It works similar to you by just searching the EPG for the next epiosode and setting it to record, but uses an ID rather than having to read the program name that we would.

The two systems are independent.

That's not quite how it works...

It searches for programmes with the same series id, not specifically a next episode id, since there's nothing on a particular programme to say what the id of the next episode will be. When a matching series id is found, the episode id is used to make sure the same thing isn't recorded, so you don't get duplicates.

The episode id should (though I can't swear to it) appear in the now/next data, to trigger accurate recording, so to that extent it is the same data, in the the ids are common, but of course a different EIT table is used to trigger the accurate recording from the one that's used for searching the whole EPG for series links.

It was only a simple explanation I was offering. It would just be nice if it did actually work

hi Guys,

I did not realise that there were three different systems .i.e. Accurate Recording, padding and Series Link. I have not heard of the first one before, although, as I have only just started down this path so it is not surprising perhaps.

I am at the moment trying to research what I will buy when I replace my three old Analogue TVs and 2 VCRs. We sometimes record on the main tv/vcr and watch on one of the small ones (in the bedroom).

I am wondering if it is even worth buying a PVR when you can buy a Humax TV with integrated twin tuners + Analogue tuners with a 160GB hard drive. Perhaps, what I should be looking at is 3 of these with two DVD recorder/Players?

What am I missing here?

Thanks for the help

I'm on 0.15 and considering how unreliable AR is I'm not sure I'd use Series Link if I had it and instead use Auto Padding and setup several Daily/Weekly schedules. That way unless it changes dramatically you've a better chance of catching it.

I think the simple truth is you just have to monitor it no matter how you setup recordings.
