iPhone - My opinion
CoolboyA
28-12-2007
Having had a good hour long play about on one of these today i think i can safely say they are the most over hyped and expensive phone i have ever seen!

Ok, it is an iPod too (Which i think is brilliant) but that is about it.... Oh, it also has internet on it.

Things i liked:

Integrated new iPod
Touch screen and some functions
Internet access (Limited though)

Things i did not like:

The price tag: £265 + £35/£55 per month
The crappy camera
Crap speakers - Why are they shoved away at the bottom next to the charger connection :S
No proper bluetooth
Menu system
Not so responsive touch screen - Took up to 3 times to press buttons
Texting! It is a nightmare
The whole "Screen flip" thing - Not as good as it is cracked up to be
Temprimental connectivity

Now, i am not bashing Apple or its many "i" products but, this phone is very last generation. They introduce it into the market when many phones have 3G, 5MP cameras, full internet, proper bluetooth etc. The price tag is also a bit of a shocker! Although, they are known for their high prices.

I could see myself having one in the future, when they become cheap - Which, given time, they will.

Is there anyone else out there that just thinks it is another Apple "must have" gimmick?

i don't have the problems you had with the touchscreen. i must say it takes a while to get used to typing on it; you have to learn to trust the autocorrection.

why do you say it doesn't have full internet?

did you take a pic with it?

my only negative with the phone is the fact that it works on GPRS/EDGE. when on EDGE its as fast as it is at home on wifi but on GPRS it's so very very slow. and there's no EDGE in my immediate area.

many of your points are invalid if you play with the phone for more than ONE HOUR.
Texting is a piece of cake, it predicts what youre going to type correctly most of the time.
Crap speakers? The best ive ever had on a phone...maybe you need better quality rips of your music CDs
Nothing wrong with the screen flip. Just learn to use it.

While it may not be the most technologically advanced phone, its by miles the most innovative; much like the Nintendo Wii. Why is *everyone* else copying the iPhone now? Theyre scared because they know theyve been holding back interface evolution for years.

Which phones are copying the iPhone?

I find the interface to be very responsive personally. Much faster then other phones I have had. Certainly it's not as prone to crashing like as many Symbian and WM phones I've owned. Typing however takes some getting used to at first.

The camera is certainly pretty basic. But not one of my priorities in a phone. Bluetooth functionality is rumoured to be improved in a future software update.

Considering this is a first generation iPhone - it's very impressive. If it causes other mobiles to improve their user interfaces and have larger and clearer screens then it's a step in the right direction.

(by the way this comment is posted from the iPhone)
To OP:

wow one whole hour, you could definitely form a justified opinion of the iPhone in that time...not!!

1) you complained of the price tag which is quite steep but why not do something smart like myself and get one on pay as you go (jailbreak). Although IMO the contract prices aren't that bad considering all the features of the phone.

2) the camera really isn't that bad the quality of the photos are just as good if not better than my old LG U880. And who really uses a camera that much certainly not me.

3) you said the speakers were crap: this left me baffled how on earth are the speakers bad?? Theyre the best I've seen on any phone! And who gives two hoots if the speakers are near the charger??? LOL!

4) eh what's wrong with the menu system? Its amazing especially with just the one button bringing you straight back to the menu!

5) it may just have been the iPhone you were looking at but on my phone the screen is very responsive and I never have to press 3 times to get a response!

6) you said the testing wasn't good. Well I can honestly say I'm very impressed by it. Overall it is much quiker to text on this phone than any regular phones. The predictive text is really good so if ever a mistake is made it is nearly always corrected immediately!

7) you said the screen flip is not what its cracked up to be. I honestly can't fault it. Its quick and perfect imo and the zoom is also amazing!

Overall I can say that it is easily functionable with brilliant functions and I would recommend the iPhone to anyone on payg!

Yeah, definitely take more than a few minutes of texting to get used to it, as its pretty unique to phones. You have to unadjust from the 12 key or T9 input method.

But once you become accustomed to it, its actually very fast. I can type much faster on it than a regular 12 key pad.

Yes, its an expensive phone.

“The crappy camera”

In use, its not bad. Missing some key things like flash but the quality of pictures it takes took me by surprise. Take a look at some here http://flickr.com/cameras/apple/iphone/

Don't understand this point?

“No proper bluetooth”

I too would like better bluetooth features.Using Apples own iSync software on OSX I can wirelessly sync contacts/calendar data with Nokia, SE and Moto phones, but not the iPhone. Weird.

“Menu system”

Don't understand this point either. It has the best menu interface I have ever seen on a Phone.

“Not so responsive touch screen - Took up to 3 times to press buttons”

Don't agree with this. Most responsive touch screen I have ever used.

??? It does what it is supposed to do. automatically adjust photos and webpages to landscape/portrait mode. Vital for sites that are too wide for portrait view. This is a feature which you do not truly appreciate until you go back to an inferior browser/phone and struggle to get the text to a readable size without having to scroll horizontally.

As a user of the iPhone since July the only thing I agree with the OP is the price. However, you get what you pay for.
