Mobile phone history
As I approach my birthday and my (mentioned elsewhere) forthcoming purchase of a Nokia 6300, I was thinking today about how many mobile phones I had owned since I trawled the shops of South Wales for a U on my birthday in 1999...and surprised myself.
1999: Phillips C90 (on U / BTCellnet - sold to my brother) 2001: Nokia 5110 (sold to my dad!) 2002: Nokia 3310 (kept as emergency backup phone) 2003: Nokia 3530 (just stopped working one day) 2005: Nokia 3330 (on loan) 2006: Nokia 1600 2006: Nokia 1600 number 2 2006: Nokia 6230 (second hand) 2008: Nokia 6300 For someone who doesn't subscribe to the notion that "new is better" and who groans every time his brother has ANOTHER new phone... I sure have had a lot of (boring) phones. What about everyone else's hall of shame? |

I can't believe how many phones I've had, and as you will see, I'm a total Nokia whore!
These are the rough dates I had them... 2000: 5146 (5110) on one2one 2001: 3310 on BT cellnet 2002: 3410 on o2 2003: 7210 on o2 2004: 6600 (I got mugged lol) on o2 2004: 6600 (no. 2!) on o2 2005: 6630 on o2 2006: N73 on Vodafone 2007: N82 on o2 (got it today, so it will be my 2008/09 phone!) I've also had loan phones and other crappy things when mine wasn't working or had to be repaired etc. |

Dixons (remember them), sold them for £50 and all you had to pay for, were your calls. It was on the BT Cellnet network. And if the battery ran down, you could run it off two AA batteries. I decided to keep it as a kind of antique of the future. |

I still have the very first contract mobile I ever owned- a Motorola D170, still in it's box.

I like Nokia as well.
![]() 1998 - Siemens C10 (fell to bits gradually over 2 years) 1998 - Nokia 5110 (stopped charging after 3 years) 1999 - Philips C12 (call quality got worse over time) 1999 - Philips Savvy (still works today) 1999 - Nokia 3210 (still works... still very admired) 2000 - Motorola M3788 (boring phone, abandoned) 2001 - Nokia 7110 (hated slide, reverted back to 3210) 2002 - Nokia 3310 (wow... still looks new today) 2002 - Nokia 3410 (Very disappointed with this. I gave it away) 2003 - Nokia N-Gage (nice but bulky, died after 1 year) 2003 - Nokia 3510i (Felt so great, worked well, looked ugly) 2004 - Nokia 6600 (Incredible, used as a main phone today) 2005 - Motorola RAZR (looked great, died after 1 year) 2006 - Nokia 1100 (for old times sake) 2006 - Samsung D600 (Best phone ever... too scratched now to use) ![]() 2007 - Nokia 6300 (I adore this phone, but it's very delicate. I keep it wrapped in cotton wool) 2007 - Nokia 2610 (Loved the look of this phone) The two phones I mainly use today are the Nokia 6600 and 3310. I also have the Nokia 3220 and Samsung A800, which I inherrited. The 3220 is very tough and I would seriously recommend it. |

2000 Motorola StarTac (2nd hand)
2001 Motorola M3788e 2001 Nokia 3210 2002 Nokia 3330 2002 Sony J70 2003 Nokia 6310i 2003 Nokia 5210 2004 Nokia 3510i 2004 Nokia 7600 2004 Motorola (can't remember it's actual name, it was a huge 3 phone) 2005 Sharp GX10i 2005 Nokia 3220 2006 Nokia 1110 2006 Nokia 6234 2007 Nokia 6300 I've probably missed a few and the dates will be inaccurate. As you can see I am a bit of a phone wrecker. My favourite of the bunch is probably the Sony J70, it was a cracking phone, the jog wheel was a brilliant idea. |

Guys my phone list is so long I cant even remember all my phones. I've had well over 30 handsets since 1999 which I am well ashamed of just thinking of all that money I wasted.

I should add that it was the Phillips C12 not 90 that I had on U...god knows why I thought the model number was C90.
Lovely little phone, a great introduction to the mad world of mobiles. Simple, intuitive and with picture+text messaging, and a mad little "life luck" game built in. I remember you could also text "NEWS" to 80202 to get free newsflashes, I kept up to date with 9/11 on the bus home that way. I also had one of the first SMS subscription services, albeit free... Every F1 weekend I got the qualifying, testing and race results delivered to my phone. I was also one of the first people in my school to get a user logo from BoltBlue for my Nokia, long before Jamster and Ringtone King et al got in on the act. |

siemens c25, great simple to use phone ( wish i had never got rid of it,so reliable) on vodafone, offer with shopping at tesco. 2000. got mrs her own fone, sagem but cant recall model now, for xmas that year . she still misses her sagem even now but it was playing up.
nokia 3330 x 5, 3 for me and 2 for mrs. crap signal strength and all kept losing signal while talking, hated them but having said that, 1 is still working as a simple to use granny fone for mom in law when she is out. 2002-2003 siemens a65 me and mrs got matching new fones while looking round sales after xmas 2003. both great fones, simple and very effective. mrs gave out in summer, mine still going as a spare. summer 2007 mrs got new samsung z500 and loves it, in October 2007 I got a sony ericsson k750i ( only coz I cant find siemens any more), and it is brilliant. i absolutely love it and will keep till it falls apart. we are still on vodafone and have kept our numbers through all ?????? the fones, yes ok it aint many. |

I reckon since 1996 I must have had about 250-300 different phones.
I worked for the biggest retailer, one of the biggest distributors and one of the networks, so any time a new phone came out I tended to get one given to me to use until the next new one was released. Currently using a Nokia N95 and a blackberry 8800. Although I just bought a Nokia 8910i from Ebay. |

So basically, we've all had the 3310 at one time or another.
It's interesting to see what people considered 'the next step up' from the 3310. In all new phones, I look for 3310-style charms. |
