Couple of Humax queries

Machine is 1 yr old and running v20 SW.

First one is I have noticed that it appears slow to refresh the screen (like a second of black screen but with the right sound) when changing channels - but could be that it always did this ?

Second one is that I keep finding the box is in on (I can hear disk / fan noise) even though the machine looks to be in standby. I know the v20 sw now means the box boots up in the background to check the epg before a recording, but I think it's not always shutting down properly...eg last night it was off but I could hear the disk on etc. There was no recording in progress. I turned it on and then off again and then it shut down properly ( i.e went silent with no disk spinning). I'm concerned that something in v20 is not shutting off correctly and leaves the machine with disk spinning all night / day which won't be good for the machine (or my leccy bill)

Any thoughts ?

Don't think this is normal. Perhaps try retuning the channels in or a reset to defaults. Did you reset to defaults after upgrading to version 20?

Believe it or not those that are supposedly in the know have said this a new feature called "Active Standby". For some bizarre reason at 4am when it checks for software updates it was made to stay on, so that when you switch the box on in the evening some 12 hours later the EPG would still be populated! Of course there has always been the option to do this yourself and at a more appropriate time than to leave it on from 4am, so it seems a very odd new addition.

This new feature in true Humax style doesn't work for everyone It is suppose to be taken out of the next version as they can't make the simple act of keeping the box on work reliably for all! Personally I believe it is nothing more than a stupid bug that Humax didn't want to own up to.

It has never done it on my box with version 20, however if you turn off the auto update option it shouldn't do it.

This may mean you miss the next over the air update, but you can of course just upload to the box at your leisure when it's made available for download.

Or you could change the time it looks for the update from 4 am to early evening.

Thanks for quick replies...The box did have a default reset etc after installing v20..but I might do that again to see if it puts it back to normal.

As for the active standby ..i was aware of that and I can also see it doing it just before a recording ...and that's fine - but the issue I have is that it doesn't seem to shutdown cleanly in the evening ( I say in the evening but that's really when I watch it /turn it off and then notice that it hasn't shutdown properly). I can understand that it's the active standby turning the box on when I check it in the morning, but don't understand why if I then power on and off that it doesn't truly go off.

Also - once or twice I've noticed that sometimes there has been no clock symbol on the disply when it has been off and I thought this was meant to indicate it was due to record something. Given i have something recording most days I expected this to be on - so a power on and then off and it shut down correctly and then the clock symbol appeared. ...is this related maybe ?

I would go along with that although I set mine to come on late morning (I'm retired!). I found that cancelling the auto update did not shut down the fan/drive at all but changing the time did.

Yes I would agree another reset to defaults would be a good idea; it certainly took two reset to defaults here before things started working sensibly.

I think you are confusing active standby (which causes the box to start up in the middle of the night) and auto tracking which causes the box to start up 15 minutes before the due time of a program.

I wouldn't worry about the presence (or not) of the clock symbol on the front panel; it has always been a bit erratic in my experience.

Active standby is a bit misleading, the box is on as normal just the display shows the clock to make it look as it does when off. It's not in standby at all really, Active Standby = On but with the clock displayed.

Fifteen minutes prior to a recording the box will turn on as accurate recording needs to allow for upto 10 minutes early start, the Humax is on early just in case the program starts early. It sits there waiting to see the program to record becoming the "Now On" then it starts, they then change the display from the clock to the normal REC display. As it is really fully on, you hear the hard-drive and fan going like normal.

The staying on after a software update check is a different thing, which I call a bug, I don't believe for one second it was intended functionally.

Probably another software bug. Humax seem to break more than they fix sometimes
