So did anybody else think that DT overacted more in the DW xmas special, than in the Extras episode last night?
Also,
I bet RTD is gutted that he didn't think of the name "schlong" for an alien, before Ricky Gervais did LOL

No, I thought he was fine in both... question is... is the clip canon? It was TX'd on BBC ONE with the current Doctor so...

Tennant was fine but it did show more than any other scene in the whole dreary thing just how out of touch and bad a writer Gervais is.

Honestly, those jokes must have fallen through a time tunnel from 1985...

I love Gervais and Merchant as writers, and as performers, but I was a bit disappointed by the special last night. I didn't think it was as good as the series - some scenes (especially the bit with Gordon Ramsay) felt so false and conspicuous, just so the script could incorporate a big name.

I'm surprised none of the VOTD haters haven't started a 'Extras DW BETTER than VOTD' thread!

Regards,

Cypher

I thought Tennant went back to the wooden acting that DW is used to in the classic series. Although i suppose that was what Gervais and Merchant were aiming for which in that case it was done perfectly.

Yes, but the "how to kill an alien with something you find in a chip shop" was very recently used in the Slitheen episodes!

Have the "she'd make a better companion than CT" threads started yet?

That was my assumption too, it felt very 'old series' but i think he was having a dig at the Peter Kay monster too

Gervais probably would have been really asked to appear on Who if he could actually play characters which, unlike Peter Kay, he can't. He's just bitter. Although the Extras special was great IMO.

I thought that as well. I liked the way all the guest stars sent themselves/their shows up in true Extras tradition-especially the two-bit "celebs" in the BB house, like Lisa Scott-Lee

The only guest appearance I was unsure about was Gordon Ramsay's. Was the joke that he was involved in a shouting match, yet not swearing?

I think there was supposed to be some joke there with the not swearing and using increasingly odd insults, princesstinsel.

Perhaps you are reading a bit too much into it.
Remember Andy had already burst his girdle at a casting in front of his nemisis and had been treating the extras & Maggie very badly - IMHO the slug was a reference to Andy Milman himself, not anyone else...

I felt the Dr Who scene was a bit obvious and a bit out of date. There were plenty of jokes about the sci-fi genre which Gervais could have doen but he went for the "crap monster" joke which is not exactly original.

Clive Owen's cameo was brilliant though.

The best Extras cameos IMHO:
1. Patrick Stewart
2. Ian McKellen
3. David Bowie
4. Clive Owen
5. Les Dennis

I thought George Michael was hilarious.

'Sting, he's a f***ng do-gooder'

Also the Jade Goody doll, still has me laughing thinking about it.

That was my first thought as well.

LOL, like he needed 'to be seen' like Peter Kay did. Didn't he have a DVD coming out at the time?

That was the whole point of the episode. Andy did Doctor Who so he could be kept in the public eye.

Truth is, if Gervais wanted to be in an episode of DW - he would be. End of.

He could play the long-forgotten district manager for TimeLords PLC

Just got round to watching this last night and I agree, it was a VERY 1980s view of 'Who'. Even the dialogue made Tennant sound like Colin Baker: "You probably know it better as... table salt!"

Well Gervais would make quite a good Meddling Monk...

I think he may have been overacting slightly, but I'm pretty sure that would have been deliberate; that sketch was tongue-in-cheek, after all, like the whole program really.

Incidentally, I thought the Extras Christmas Special was brilliant - I never watched the series, wish I had now! After that, I'm starting to develop a certain amount of respect for Gervais.

More like the manager of the Slough branch of Torchwood.
