Liverpool has produced more Number 1 singles than any other city in the world. As such, as part of the European Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations, there will be a concert at the new Liverpool Echo Arena at Kings Waterfront featuring a number of the artists that have had the 56 Number 1 singles Liverpool has produced. These and other more recent artists will perform their interpretations of some the city's previous Number 1's at the concert.

The actual Number 1 Project is designed to secure Liverpool's 57th Number 1 single during 2008, with a release of Cilla Black's 'Anyone Who Had a Heart', produced by Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds, and sung by Atomic Kitten. Whether it succeeds is anyone's guess, but suffice to say, even if it doesn't, Liverpool's 57th Number 1 probably won't be too far away. This will be followed in February by the release of The Number 1 Project Album, featuring the various artists cover versions.

If it's being "sung" by Atomic Kitten they'll destroy it. Possibly the worst girl "group" of all time.

I suppose the problem was whatever song was chosen, and whichever group/person was chosen to sing it, it was never going to appeal to everyone. However with Atomic KItten, they have a group that were extremely popular, and have previously had three Number 1's of their own. Add this to the fact it's being produced by Ian Broudie who has been to Number 1 himself, and the organisers have given themselves a good shot of getting this song to Number 1 as well.

Bet it doesn't crack the top ten. Atomic Kitten are now and have been finished for years. They have trashed every song they've covered, and to do that song, makes me go cold.

I can see where you're coming from. Out of all the songs in Liverpool's 'back catalogue' it does seem an odd choice. That said, I'm not sure what I'd pick instead given the wide variety of songs to choose from. As for Atomic Kitten they did have their fans, so who knows. Personally I'm going to reserve judgement until I've heard it.

I think we should try to get Ringo Starr's Liverpool 8 to #1. Would be fitting that the last only Beatle not to have had a solo #1 so far should finally get one, and what a fitting title too.

WOW! Just seen that my fave band Shack, are doing a cover of A Hard Days Night for the album of Liverpool covers out on Feb 4th. The album also has The Farm, OMD, Scaffold and China Crisis on. I CANT WAIT. Hopefully this will give Shack the recognition they really deserve.

Im going

Eton Road and Anthony Hannah are also peforming

Are they doing all the number ones on the concert though? Because I wouldnt of thought they'd have time, I know that Anthony and Eton Road are singing their own material as well as one of the number 1s each.

I wrote to the venue asking when the event would finish as I reckoned it would be a good 5 hours if they did all the number ones. They wrote back and said they didn't know and would get back to me. Still waiting.

Having said that I have also heard that each guest will perform a number one of their choice and their own biggest hit. This would make more sense - and could be more interesting. But have Eton Road had a hit?
