Plasma is best; you might find a second hand one for that money.
Otherwise settle for LCD on offer at all the electrical/hi-fi dealers or even department stores. |

I wouldn't buy a new or second 42" LCD. You will be disappointed with SD material.
The 37" or 42" Panasonic Plasmas won't dissapoint. You should be able to find the 37" for around £700 or less and you'll be delighted with the picture. |

Just checked.
42" in Currys for £700. 37" £650. Both are excellent. |

Make sure you test drive in the shop anything you like the look of before you buy it. If possible, get an assistant to plug a DVD upscaler in to the tv and watch some different kinds of films. . action and sci-fi will test the blacks out nicely.
Don't touch LCD at a screen size of 42". If you're gonna buy a plasma at that size, it's worth paying top notch so that you get a decent SD picture on Freeview and DVD. Sky SD looks terrible on both LCD and plasmas as Murdoch insists on compressing the signal to death. I would strongly advise buying a Pioneer Plasma. Nothing else compares unless you go past the usual high st brands and pay for designer makes. |

Pioneers are excellent. Panny Plasmas are nearly as good and probably in this lady's budget.

Please show the links for a 42" Pioneer plasma for £600, a lot of people will be interested.
![]() That's why I said it's worth paying top notch if you're going to have a screen of that size. There's no point buying crap for the sake of it. After all, you have sit in front of the tv and watch the picture it gives you. In my experience, the bigger the screen size, the better technology you need behind the screen. And that means higher cost. If I knew where you could get a 42" plasma Pioneer for £600, I'd sell the information on eBay and make myself rich.
