Let the contestants be more natural
I was thinking about this as I posted my reply on an Alisha thread.
I said how I thought Alisha came across as whiny in the VTs, but sweet on GMTV. On the X-Factor, it's obvious that the contestents are manipulated into how they come across in front of the cameras, and are given intructions on the type of things to say when they're speaking. I think this is a bad move. I think the contestents should be given freedom to be themselves. They should have more imput in their clothes. The stylists do a largely awful job of dressing these people. Hope were slammed when they wore the stylists slutty costumes, but when they dressed themselves people said they looked nice. Kimberly was booted out on the first night and I think the psychical image the wardrobe department gave her had as much to do with that as her singing...but when Kimberly was on GMTV after losing, she was dressed nicely and came across as very natural and down to earth. Nothing like the Big Girl, Big Personality some idiot at the X-Factor had tried to make out Kimberly was. And the VTs...Alisha and Nikki did not, imho, come across well in their VTs. Nikki always sounded arrogant and fake-tearful, and Alisha seemed whiny. Yet when they did their interviews on shows like GMTV and This Morning after losing, they both came across as likeable women. Nikki came across as strong, but approachable, where as on the XF she just seemed like a hard faced cow. I really think the contestents should be given more imput. Let them be more natural. Stop relying on contrived and forced sob stories. Let them have a much bigger say in what they wear on stage. I think this could only help them. We can still have glitz and glamour, but let's lose some of the fakery with the way they behave. |

I agree with a lot of that.
I think that the producers but them in boxes and manipulate conversations etc to fit that. |

Reality TV seems to think they have to follow a 'storyline' for each contestant, be that BB, XF, etc. To some degree, I can understand why they might think this. When you're filming people for hours on end and you have to trim it down to a few minutes per person, how do you you select what bits to show or cut? You can't just do nice bits for everyone otherwise people may switch off from 'psychophantic' rubbish. There needs to be a balance and so they show people in the light that either suits their agenda or the way they 'think' the person really is. The press do the same. How many people were surprised by how funny David Guest was on IACGMOH? It isn't easy and I don't think it will change. Good post.

If they were allowed to be themselves, at least we would be able to vote on a factually portrayed person rather than someone fake |

I agree with some points. all thought about Alisha being whiny she really isnt, Shes a nutter in a good way....
I would be upset too about being bottom 2 twice and it meant so much to her and she was always so thankful to be there, she lacked confidence which she had at auditions it knocked her for 6 im just hoping and praying, that quirky fun and happy Alisha returns and gives it all on the tour i think shel be great as she aint being judged or anything shel be having fun. Yeah but i think they should just be allowed to be themselves and maybe we could actually see them for who they are not what the editors want them to be.
