"...john barrowman is already casting doubt on wether he'll return for a third run. he tolf Inside TV: "i haven't made any decisions. if we do get the go ahead for another season, i'll have to sit down and think about it, as this most recent series was a nightmare at times""

i think it would be rubbish if he pulled out of Torchwood. obviously this is not confirmed but if he did there wouldn't be a show. what else would he do if not torchwood? a cameo in DW and judging on Joseph!?

this reminds me of the last episode of Extras.......

John would probably go back to his first love, performing on stage.

This was about a few weeks ago - comment was probably made when he was tired after filming the series and trying to fit in recording an album, doing his book and quiz show.

12 months ago he said he'd be happy playing Captain Jack for the next 5 years, and in his album notes he thanks the TW production crew for creative and imaginative schedules that allowed him to record the album - I think they're prepared to be flexible to accomodate him as much as possible.

i hope so, he pretty much makes torchwood, would be a hard act to follow in his footsteps

There really isn't any point in having Torchwood without him! The other characters are interesting (except Gwen, who's just irritating) but I wouldn't bother watching them on their own.

Oh no! I'll have to go and open a bottle of wine now. No John in Torchwood. I'll never sleep tonight for thinking about it.

i agree completely with you... he does make torchwood. the show is about him so without him there is no show.

I so hope your right. I know I'm in a minority,( I really enjoyed Torchwood), but without John it would not be the same.

i have a feeling he'll be back... especially now its on bb2 for the new series and is more likely to get more viewers.

I wonder why it was a nightmare. I know it took them 2 months longer than planned, and that it was scheduled around doctor who's filming and thus rushed (according to reports), surely he shouldn't be saying this it's hardly promoting the show is it.

I met him yesterday, so could have asked him ...!

Torchwood could carry on without him. It would be very different, though.

His new CD is just out, and he has a major tour with it in the new year. His autobiography is out in jan, and I daresay there will be some promotional stuff there. I am not sure if he'll be back in Dr Who next year, as 3 companions by the end of the year will be quite enough thank you very much.

John is never off the telly, and would be snapped up by West End or Broadway in seconds.

John IS in series 4, and torchwood is probably watched by more people than buy his album lol.

If John leaves Torchwood then they may aswell finish up the series. As others have said, it seems pointless without him in it. I doubt I would be watching it if Captain Jack wasn't in it.

I hope he stays - he seems to enjoy being in the programme...maybe with all the constant talk and hype about DT not doing another series then maybe JB just wants a bit of the same attention. At least with DT it keeps him and the show in the public eye with all the speculation...maybe JB is testing the waters to see if people wonder the same about him.

Fingers crossed he either stays in Torchwood or is made a full companion of the Dr (which I doubt will happen).

As much as I like TW and Jack, I think it wouldn't be the end of the world if he did leave - it would give the show the opportunity to explore a new direction, while obviously keeping the same core theme that Torchwood is all about.

i wouldn't put any of the current team in charge though - it would have to be someone else.

What price Martha taking over eh ?

Just think about it for a second before all the howls of derision and threats on my life

Well if he quits they could always have bad guy work out how to kill him. Then as he lies on the floor dying he suddenly glows orange and morphs into another actor.

I think if he does quit there'll be a sudden replacement by a new character from Who to maintain the link...

Maybe Martha will become the lead....

Or Rose (if she's back in our universe by series 4's end...)

Or maybe Sally Sparrow....SOMEONE from who will turn up anyway, that's the reason for the show, to maintain connection to Dr Who's universe.

While i'm firmly in the pro-sally sparrow camp, i think she'd be terrible in Torchwood.

I think Martha definately has the potential to step up from assistant to alien hunter type person.

And i'm sure Freema would jump at the chance of a lead role in a show like that.

Although knowing RTD, he'd give it to Catherine Tate as a bit of a goof.

I think Torchwood could work in different formats. Instead of an entire series they could do extended one off episodes which would be less time consuming.

Or more likely, into the Face of Boe. Can't you just imagine the FOB chasing down some alien monster and shagging Ianto?

Seriously though, I've always thought of Torchwood as John Barrowman's show in a way that Doctor Who can never belong to David Tennant or anyone else. Torchwood without Capt. Jack is like the Sarah Jane Adventures without Elizabeth Sladen.

If he does leave, then there will be no more show, think of how the X Files went downhill when Doggett relaced Mulder, it just didnt work and wasnt like the same show anymore

When the main character leaves ashow such as this, it is never the same, I certainly wouldnt watch it as to me , the show is all about Jack, and the other characters couldnt carry it off without him.

Nope, sorry, if Jack leaves Torchwood it'll be dead in the water. He's the star, he holds it together, the others are designed to be disfunctional (ie perfect for the job!) and whereas I like most of them, if any of them, particularly Gwen or Martha had any designs on taking over the whole thing would fall apart. None of them have any qualifications to do what Jack does (even without his extra knowledge of things futuristic and alien).

Do you think people said this when doctor who was first broadcast?

This show would end up like Hustle if John Barrowman leaves the show. In series 1-3 of Hustle, Adrian Lester managed to hold to hold the show together as the central charaacter. In series 4 he left due to other work commitments, thus changing the dynamic of the group, which in turn lead to a poorer 4 series. The same would happen to Torchwood should John Barrowman leaves.

So:

As yet the BBC has not commissioned S3 (and they probably won't until at least mid-way through S2), therefore no contracts have been discussed (and therefore no money has been discussed). Of course he would want to sit down & think about it. He would also think about the nightmares, then look at the contract, and the overseas sales/exposure .....

It's all to play for.
