I have a Panasonic TH42 PW5 Plasma tv which is now over 4 years old. It has been fine until this last few months when the picture has gone off completely 3 times.

As it is still under warranty it has been repaired each time but has been away for up to a month each time.

The repairers have said that it was 'nothing major' BUT spares are now virtually unobtainable for this model and if something else goes it may not be able to be repaired.

Now, as I paid over £4000 for this I am either trying to keep it going as long as possible or want it to 'break down' before march when the warranty expires !!!!

Does anyone know if parts are still available for this model and what goes wrong to make them unrepairable ???

If the screen had enough pixels fail subject to the manufacturers guide line's this would be considered a faulty panel, which can not be repaired, thus you would be given a replacement, but this is all pie in the sky I'm afraid. In saying that I'm sure that beyond three repairs the unit should be considered a "Lemon" and be replaced under warranty, is it a Domestic & General policy by any chance?

If it was 'nothing major' why did it take a month to repair?.

Certainly spares for many Plasma's are no longer available, I suspect the manufacturers seriously under estimated how unreliable they would be, and spares stocks are exhausted.

No it is not a Domestic & General warranty it is by Fenwick who offer a 5 year guarantee with all their tv's.

They use their own repair company I think who repair all other electricals so you wait your turn !

The first time it was away just under 4 weeks, the second time about 8 days and the third time nearly 3 weeks. They said first it was the power supply had failed allowing a higher voltage onto the circuit boards or something like that and even then they said the replacement parts were hard to obtain and it cost a fortune to replace all the damaged components, then it was dry joints ? and the third time I got the village idiot who did not know what was wrong with it, but that it was working now !

The pixels are all fine.

I was hoping something terminal would happen to it before the warranty expired so they had to replace it and wondered if they would just give me any model replacement or if I was entitled to goods to the value this was originally (Nearly £4000 !! )

As it has been a good tv until recently I would be tempted to go for another Panasonic but everywhere seems to recommend the Pioneer 428 even though it is only 768 resolution, I 'thought' that a full 1080P model would be better with Sky hd and a PS3 (Blu Ray) ?

Depends on the size and how far you sit from it. If you don't sit close enough then you will gain nothing from full HD and any money spent on getting a better quality TV (rather than throwing it away on unneeded full HD) is money well spent.

I had the same set for about 4 years. After about 13 Months(Guarantee Expired) my set kept switching itself off. This was a known fact at the time as a batch had been manufactured with a faulty component. The same model had the identical problem in the USA. The problem was well documented on the Internet at the time but when I called Panasonic directly they denied all knowledge of it untill I threatened them with legal action. They then sent two fitters round like a shot. They replaced a complete circuit board as they said they don't bother with the single components. The set was fine from then on. They didn't even bother checking the set first as they knew exactly what the problem was! Like a sucker I've just upgraded the set to a 50" Panny & am keeping my fingers crossed.
