Argh! My W580i (Help)

Ah shit!

I had a glass of coke right here in front of me in which I managed to knock over, in went over the phone and the desk. Now my W580i (which I've had since October) won't function properly.

I've taken it too bits (removed battery, sim card, memory card) and am hoping it'll be ok by the morning, however if it isn't do I ring Sony Ericsson or go to Virgin Mobile about the problem?

Advice much needed please. Thanks.

Firstly give the phone 24hrs to dry off in a cool dry place. Then try it. If it still doesn't work, call Virgin (if you're on contract). They will either advise you to return it to a shop (who will send it to SE) or give you a contact for SE direct.

If you're on PAYG.....try contacting SE directly, but you may well be better off just buying a new phone, given the cost and the time of repair.

Ah no. I'm on pay as you go with Virgin. I can't afford to buy another phone, in fact my Dad will go spare if it's unusable.

I'd rather pay them to repair it in any case. Is that expensive?

Damages by liquids is not covered in most repair claims unless you took out insurance. Might be worth checking the house insurance as some cover mobile phones. But as said give it enough time to dry properly in an airing cupboard. The cola may have destroyed it on contact though, its not nice stuff.

Fortunately, leaving it to dry out was the better option.
I put it all together and powered it all up today and it works fine.

I've checked all the buttons and of course the loud speaker. Everything works. Which is great. But it'll teach me to have coke near my phone.

Hi east_boy_16,

I had a W810i, It broke down in a similar way, It wasnt coke though . It used to be on Orange Contract and I did have Orange Care but because I upgrade my handset earlier then the 12 Months, My Orange Care did no longer cover it! and it was no longer "contracted" it was now Pay&Go.
So I was a bit like you p*ssed at the though of having to pay a ton to get it replaced, (It was brand new at this point).

So I gave Sony a call (Its weird how on the list of phone numbers for each country, UK is the only one that charges? ) anyway, I spoke to them, Who said that because it was still under 12 Months and I could prove it, They would replace it for free, All I ended up paying was the P&P.

All I did was photocopy the contract with my address on it, Attached a letter saying the basics and posted it off.

-Keiran.

Edit; Duh! Silly me! I see you already have yours fixed.

Interesting reading. I have mine fixed (thank goodness), yes, but it's always interesting to read other peoples' experiences.
