Rose wines
I don't often drink, but when I do, am partial to a glass of nicely chilled Portugese Rose. I noticed the other day though that there are lots of different ones, from various countries. Can anyone tell me if they all taste basically the same? I'm afraid to buy a bottle of say South African if it has a different taste completely, but on the other hand, I may be missing out on something even better!

Portugese Rose is a bit of a cliche, bit like German Riesling. Don't know if it's any better than it used to be since the days of Mateus Rose. The Californian ones are usually nice, although depends on what you get. Had one from M&S the other week called Casa Leona I believe, which tasted of Ribena, fantastic it was!

Rose wines are all the same, in the way that white wines are all the same. In other words, yes, there are lots of differences, but they are essentially the same drink.
I really like the zinfandels from the new world, or Anjou rose from France. |

Ah well it depends on your taste of course, but I happen to love Mateus. If I got one that tasted like Ribena I would vommit and the bottle full would go down the sink pretty quickly!

Personally, the only type of wine I like drinking if any is white wine. However, one day when we was at a pub, because we had spent over a certain amount of money whilst at the pub, we were given a free bottle of Italian rose wine to take home.
I couldn't possibly have said no thanks, as I always feel guilty if I turn down gifts offered to me!

![]() If they all tasted the same what would be the point in branding them? They all taste same in the same way that cheeses from within the same and different countries do... |

There is a huge difference in Rose wines, same way as there is a huge difference in red or white ones. Only way to find out which ones you like is to try them.

Echo Falls California Rose is not bad, quite cheap (£11 for 3 bottles at our local shop) but tastes OK to me.

white wines aren't all the same.
white wine is just the grape juice, fremented, and can can be from white (green) or red grapes/. I would imagine connoisseurs can tell the difference at that level. rose wines are made from red grapes, as the juice is left in contact with the skins to leech a little of the colour from the grape skins. so they are not as tannic as red wines, and retain more of the character of the white the taste will differ depending on the area, and the grape variety or blend, but rose wines probably dont have the "cachet" or expensive reds.or whites. personally i find rose sparklers very enjoyable. |

Are both zinfandel and grenache sweet? Had one once but forgotten which of the two it was, too sweet for me so didn't enjoy it but wanted to try the other.
I love Jacobs Creek Shiraze Rose and Wolf Blass Yellow lable. |

All wine does that is the problem, i could easily polish off 2 bottles of wine in one night (it's only 6 large glasses), then you remember that is equal to about 8 or 9 pints of lager and it makes you think again.

Blooming heck, your wine glasses are either huge or you fill them to the rim. I get 5 sometimes 6 glassfuls from one bottle of wine.

That is the definition of 'glassful' though, isn't it?

Well exactly, large glasses. A standard wine measure to convert to units is 125ml, of which there is 6 to a glass.
Not when used expressively as I did. Wine is supposed to have plenty of room in a glass to slosh about (look poncy ), you're not supposed to fill to the rim.
