Sorry to be thick, but can somebody explain the difference.
Which is best. I'm working nights at work and the music they play is unbearable.

There is no difference. Both will play MP3 format music. iPods will play Apple's AAC format. Plus if you use iTunes to download music it will only play on your iPod. iPods tend to be more expensive overall than other companies like Creative, Sandisk, Archos, iRiver.

I would go with a Creative player, you can drag and drop into your mp3 player and I love mine. I would never go back to Ipods.

Can anyone help?

Everyone in the family has a Samsung MP3 player, very easy to use, all our downloads & CD uploads are on Windows MP.

DD has just got an i pod for Xmas, which I believe means we now have to install i tunes? Can we though transfer files from Windows to i tunes, or do we have to re-download anything that wants to go on the i pod?

Pardon my ignorance!

Yes, you need to install Itunes. I believe you can them import stuff into the Itunes library from your computer so downloading them again shouldnt be necessary.

In fact when I installed Itunes, I'm sure it gives you an option to search for all music on your computer and bring it into your Itunes library.

I have used a Sony MP3 player, Creative Zen MP3 player and a couple of Ipods.

The only one I wouldnt use again is the Sony MP3 player due to the Sonic Stage software which was a nightmare to use.

The Creative Zen was dead easy to set up (we have Vista), with no software needed at all.

I have a 2gig Mobiblu Cube which is very cute and does garner lots of positive comments but unfortunately there's no plans in making larger capacity versions.

Recently I've had my eye on the new Sony 8gig player as they've finally done away with SonicStage (thank flip for that!) and incorporated drag and drop to make things a lot easier to use.
