I read its "near" the end of S4

Might make sense if David Tennant is AWOL for the whole episode. It'd ensure those three get squeezed into the opening credits anyway.
Also, I was wondering whether they'll bother putting Freema on the opening sequence when she does appear throughout season 4

I would predict that:

1) Even if DT is entirely absent from the episode (which I don't think will happen), he will remain in the credits.

2) Catherine Tate (and later John Barrowman and Kylie Minogue) have set the precedent that companions appear in the opening credits.

I wonder if this will lead to a 4 part finale rather than a three?

Don't worry about that, we've seen how fast the end credits can be run, so the start ones will just have to catch up!
