Remaking a Classic...
Capnm

If you could remake a classic story with the current cast, sfx, budget etc which one would it be and why?

I don't know what mine would be so I've drafted a list of five because it's too too hard...

Planet of the Daleks
Evil of the Daleks
Claws of Axos
Terror of the Zygons
City of Death

Robots of Death would have appeared but that kinda got done a few days ago.

IMHO, 'Claws Of Axos' and 'Planet Of The Daleks' are both absolutely horrendous, and should be left well alone.

'Terror Of The Zygons' and 'City Of Death' I feel are just superb and don't require a remake.

So, yeah, that would leave 'Evil Of The Daleks', which makes sense as the original version is largely missing.

i dunno Claws of Axos had potential, probably the weakest of the 5 really IMHO but that's why I'd include it.

Planet dunno, so little of it exists and given the relevance of the story to the history of the show it would be wonderful to have seen it.

City of Death I agree is wonderful and a true classic, I think that's really when Tom was in his pomp as the doctor.

Interesting question...I think I'd remake some of the missing Pat Troughton stories.

All six eps of Planet Of The Daleks survive - tho' I think ep 3 might be black and white only, dunno if they ever got around to colourising it.

Are you sure you're not thinking of 'Power Of The Daleks', as that has no known surviving eps?

City of Death is great as it is.

The others could all be redone with a bigger budget and be none the worse for it.

To the list I would add:

Inferno (cut down to 2x45mins - and maybe done with Torchwood instead of UNIT)
The Deamons - a great story spoilt by Jo Grant's general silliness
Planet of the Spiders - with CGI spiders
The Brain of Morbius - using real locations to replace an obviously studio-bound planet
Horror of Fang Rock (though that was pretty much re-done as Tooth & Claw)
Destiny of the Daleks - good story, let down by really bad special effects and a general air of 'cheapness'

What would people think about going through the classic series like they're currently doing with star trek?

(And before you worry, they're not exactly replacing every space scene with EXPLOSIONS and KEWL PHASERS! but being completely respectful and trying to match the old shots as best they can so they don't stick out...)

I'm sure some wobbly spaceships and string based craft could do with a re-do!

I'm not sure I would welcome this move, as I personally like the classic shows as they are, however I know that some of fandoms newest members avoid the classic episodes because of the 'cheap' effects.

If remastered Who would be a gateway for getting more fans interested in classic who then great!!

No no, no need to remaster the classic series IMO. I think the new fans just need to remember the era the classic series was made in and that the budgets were a fraction of what they are today and just enjoy it for what it is.

They've already re-mastered some of the classic series on the DVDs. Certain stories give you the option to watch with new added CGI effects. In fact the latest release - Destiny Of The Daleks - has this feature. Of course it's always optional and you can watch the original version if you want.

I think that's what always irritated fans of other franchises when this type of thing was attempted before, such as with the special editions of the original Star Wars trilogy and E.T., or when 'Red Dwarf: Remastered' first came out on video. The attitude was very much one of "Sorry, you can't see the original versions you grew up with ever again, they've been erased from history! And you're only allowed to see these shiny new versions from now on!" which pi**ed people off no end. Only after a lot of pressure did they finally relent and release the originals too.

Current budget and sfx? OK, then let's do an Unearthly Child and have them convince us Catherine Tate is David Tennant's granddaughter.

Tomb of the Cybermen. Without doubt.

So Catherine Tate would be playing a teenage schoolgirl then?

(...waits for inevitable comment about a certain character with a certain catchphrase...)

That would be my choice as well, one of the few to really zip along with the story and very little padding (Seeds Of Death) it also had a very effective cast. Although something might have to be done about the tiny robot worms/fish type things, as noisy as hell but still managed to creep up on people, and maybe less of the odd overweight cyberman on set. (one of my old cybermen episodes pasttimes, spot the overwieght one, try it, its a fun game)

That could be a Freudian slip.

Well no - given David Tennant's age, Susan could be a toddler at most. Perhaps even a baby, not able to talk.

Bliss.

The last we saw Susan (the Five Doctors) she was in her mid 40s. If she is a Time Lady she could have regenerated since then. If she escaped the time war she could have turned herself into a Human like the Master did. So maybe Donna is the Human version of Susan (or some other time lady – Rani or Romana) and has a Fob watch somewhere.

While I don't think you're taking this entirely seriously, I feel the need to point out that the age of the actor bears no relation to the age of the character.

Which could potentially lead to an interesting visual paradox if Susan was to be brought back and was played by an older actress. It would be amusing (the first couple of times) to see June Brown, for example, calling DT "Grandfather".

Not taking this seriously? Me?

I figure if we're redoing An Unearthly Child Susan would have to be quite young, in order to be attending school. And getting back to Mansun's post, I couldn't see her as being like Lauren Cooper, because her teachers couldn't be bovvered to look into her home life.

Not to mention that Lauren can't be a time lord, as she died in the CT Christmas special.

Ah, but did she? We never saw a body. My theory is that she regenerated into Vicky Pollard.

Well then she's serving a long sentence in a Thai jail and we needn't worry about her!
