Hi
We've bought a new Philips TV today 32" HD ready and we struggling to get everything attached - DVD Recorder, V+ box etc.

We're going to get an outdoor areial in soon but we should be able to get all the channels through our Virgin Plus box. The only way we can do this is through the HD lead from the TV to the V+ box but the picture isn't great. We've got the 2 scart leads connected but for some reason they're not working properly. One is from the TV to the DVD player and the other is from the V+ box to the TV.
Has anyone got any advice cos we've run out of ideas and as you can tell me and my partner aren't very technical!

You should only have the HDMI Lead between the V+ box and the TV...disconnect the scart lead from the V+ to the TV...you shouldn't have both connected.
I don't know how many HDMI inputs your TV has as you haven't given the model no.
Put the HDMI lead in the socket marked HDMI1 and select that input using the TVs remote.
Without a separate outside aerial you are limited to only using the V+ box.

Thanks for your quick reply. I'll just use the HD lead from the V+ box to the TV and take out the scart lead. The man at currys said to get the best picture is to go through the DVD player - do we need to connect a scart from the DVD player to the TV? Think it has 2 HDMI inputs.
It's the model 32PFL7962.

Thanks I'll go and try that and see if that's any better, hopefully it will as the picture is not as good as it is in the shop.

Sorry I meant to put in my previous post, do we need a scart from the V+ box to the DVD Recorder as we've been told we get the best picture if we watch it through the DVD.
This is so confusing!

Thanks for that.

It's TS20 1JF. HDMI - we don't think that has a HDMI socket in the DVD so have got a scart lead into both the TV and the V+ box.

Am I expecting too much to get a perfect picture from the V + box?

take the scart out from v+ to tv, only use hdmi

HD channels will be good

play about with contrast, brightness etc. They are probally set at factory settings. Sky has a hd setting picture but dont know about virgin

your aerial depends what transmittor your on

Bilsdale west moor ................ Group K mounted horizontal

Pontop pike ............................ Group c/d mounted horizontal

Your best bet ? buy a £20 box and see if you get a reception first. Your looking for 80 to 85% reception as after analogue shut off digital strength will increase. The box will tell you what strength you have

unless of course your telly has a freeview tuner built in SO still look for signal strength

Yes our tv has a freeview built in to it. The picture seems pretty good now and am really pleased with it and the sound is brilliant.

Which channels are HD? is it just bbc 1 or are there any others on virgin?

We're planning on getting a good outdoor aerial fitted next week which will let us have channels 1 to 5, get teletext and freeview.

I'm getting the DVD to play on Ext 2 and my daughter's VTECH game console on Ext 3 but this looks very fuzzy in the picture.

Also, when i switch the tv on it goes straight on to the HDMI 1 channel where the virgin is coming from and it says 720 p. Is this the right setting?

forgot to say your aerial needs to be AMPLIFIED EXTRA HIGH GAIN as well for both transmittors.

make sure he re-wires ALL cabling with wf-100 or equivalant, this should be in the price, around £150

virgin box should be 1080 BUT depends on recordings , what your watching. You will have to play about as say football might be better on 720

dvd should be av1/ scart 1 for RGB, so go into dvd settings and make sure its on rgb output

vtech????? dont know outputs but try scart 2 , a better scart or put on a smaller telly

He's going to charge us £110 for doing the main tele and also a socket in my daughter's bedroom for in the future.

Think it's automatically coming on as 720p when i switch the tele but i know i can alter the setting on the v + box manually i suppose like you say it depends what we're watching. The music channels are a really good sound.

I'll have to go into the settings on the DVD recorder and change it to RGB and change it to the Ext 1.

The VTECH console we just have to put the 3 wires red white and red into the side it's not too bad if she'll sit way back from the tv. we've got a scart adaptor that came with it so could try that.

Thanks for all your valuable advice!

We've swapped the scarts round to the right places and set it to RGB on the DVD Recorder. Our DVD Recorder is a Panasonic only about 2 yr old.

Now i'm trying to tune in the
V + channel into the DVD Recorder but it doesn't seem to be finding it not sure why. On the AV1 output it's now set as RGB on the DVD and AV2 Input (to the TV) is now set to S Video. On the DVD under TV System should i have it set to PAL or NTSC?

Will let you know how the reception is when we get the outdoor aerial fitted.

Ok, nice and slow...............

V+ HDMI ---> TV HDMI1 (this is for watching Virgin in near HD)
V+ TV scart ---> DVDR AV2 (this is for recording Virgin to DVD - need to set DVDR to 'input channel' AV2 (you will not find this by sweeping channels as you are doing)
DVDR HDMI ---> TV HDMI2 or DVDR AV1 ---> TV AV1 if no HDMI output on DVDR (for watching DVDs)
Ext aerial ---> DVDR RF in (for recording analog and freeview)
DVDR RF out ---> TV RF in (for watching analog and freeview)

STOP

AV1 is correct on the dvd player HOWEVER it goes to TV av1/ scart 1

on the back of the v+ box av1 goes to av2 on dvd recorder

to record virgin go to front of dvd player, flick through the channels and select AV2. This is your v+ box

what you are trying to do is correct HOWEVER its confusing. Its so you can record Freeview, but you get most if not all on the v+ box so record from it not the telly

then once you have scarts correct go in dvd settings and select PAL for everything

so dvd av1 to tv av1

v+ box av1 to dvd av2

to record v+ select av2 on dvd machine and press record

I've tried to find AV2 on the DVD Player but unfortunately it's not picking anything up! And I can't see a HDMI on the DVD Player. I'll have another go in the morning. Thanks for your patience.

I'm really pleased with our new telly!

Do you think we'll get anything for our old tv? it's only a 23" standard tv Ferguson - excellant condition with remote. Might try and sell it even if we got a little bit it all helps!

That's really useful that is cos I don't know where ours is. But it won't let me access it - i just says "timeout accessing resource". I can have a look on their website tomorrow.
