Once-big hits we can now admit were absolutely dire
To start the ball rolling, personally I would nominate Puff Daddy's 1997 I'll Be Missing You as one of the most Godawful songs ever to become a massive hit.
The slowed-down Police-riff, coupled with rhymes less complex than a 5-year old's, makes me want to pull out his tongue and roast it until the point of disintigration, to make sure he never sings again. The fact that it was propelled back to number 1 due to the death of a certain doe-eyed halfwit also adds to my chagrin. |

How about this one. I absolutely loath and detest this record with a passion, and just to top it off he has a disastrously bad mullet hair cut in the video:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JgoM0T0ADIg PLEASE don't do that to me. You should give a clue as to the song so I don't have to click on the link. That would have been stuck in my head until 2009! ![]() Serves me right for being nosy! |

I think the original poster means songs that we all thought were good at the time, but now think are rubbish, not just the usual suspects of novelty hits and summer Europop, which most right-thinking people hated at the time anyway.
For example, when I was about 11, I loved all the new 'House' music tracks that were flooding the charts. I thought I was really cool for having such tracks in my collection, and thought the way to look must involve wearing an aviator-style bomber jacket with a furry collar, and a pair of headphones held to one ear, whilst scratching the living daylights out of a 7 inch vinyl single and messing up my mum's stylus. Some xamples.... Bomb The Bass and again... Krush Coldcut and Yazz I discovered this Christmas that my mum still has all my copies of these singles, and more by such 'fantastic' artists as Lost In Bass, The House Doctors, Gene And Jim Are Into Shakes and Steinski Mass Media, I don't know why, it's certainly not the sort of music I'd listen to nowadays. I also remember at 11, attempting to make a house 'track' with my brother's Casio Keyboard and 'samples' on C-60 cassette of rants by angry tennis players from that year's Wimbledon. No computer technology at all, and no musical talent. my project failed miserably, so I went out into the garden to play football....

But Viva Forever was quite nice, reminds me of driving round France during the 1998 World Cup. |

Mrs YorkieUK reminded me of a couple of others. I found them both on Youtube.
Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough (Fantastic lyrics too) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bFGfIAJRvo Zager & Evans - In the year 2525 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhNM2K8cmU8 Take a look at this one of Whistling Jack Smith. Very weird but entertaining all the same: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQQ5sEOhbjQ |

I will confirm that my worst ever UK #1 is this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-2iwGeZ2O4 partly because it ripped off such a great song (which was a #1 in my chart) Also this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6a02004eHo and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI but I never liked any of them at the time. When I played the first 500 NM #1s I declared that the worst ever #1 single in my chart was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8-HcclFytw |

To those people saying Crazy Frog, didn't we know that was crap at the time?
Anything by Westlife has to be up there. Also agree with Pink Wafer about Brian Adams. I might be alone in this, but White Christmas by Bing Crosby gets on my wick. |

Big Hits I think nowadays are absolutely dire. hmmm let me start with this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FfZUxPF7AMI One of the reasons why I never listen to the radio because this song is played at least 25 million times a day which leads me onto this song http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=d14511Amd08 I like a lot of Kylie's songs, but this is the worst one out of the lot. How on earth it got to No.2, I don't know. Saying that mind, her music between 94 - 97 was rather crap. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ywd00tNiB20 Quote:

How on earth their first 7 singles got to No.1 I don't know. Were we all mad at the time? Here are a few singles I detest. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zDws4XhrcnU http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6WtRNQ9Z32U http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YiLsW-qLR3k Staying on the late 90's and early 00's waterfront I assume you remember the dross that were Steps and S Club 7. Why on earth they reached the top 10, I don't know. I ask the same question as before Were we all mad at the time? Here's a few singles from both bands that really get on my nerves Steps http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vxLEvFPjo0w http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lJryR6xc2Zg S Club 7 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=POEzC0UMVxM http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezt4s8PYarI Back to the current day and the christmas No.1 is a joke nowadays. All you have to do is win The X Factor. This Year was complete and utter dire. I hate Leon Jackson's Version of this song because He simply cannot sing it. I don't any other X Factor contestant could sing it either. The Only people who can sing this song are the talented divas that are Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MYhf5J9cacw And Finally any Novelty s*** like Crazy frog and Mr Blobby are on my list too, although I might accept Bob the Builder because after all HE BEAT WESTLIFE TO THE CHRISTMAS NO.1 SPOT IN 2000.

A lot have been mentioned, but Do You Really Like It? by DJ Pied Piper and Babycakes by 3 Of A Kind would be my suggestions. Both were deservedly one hit wonders.
Not that I like Leon, but I hated the original When You Believe as well. It's a boring song sung by two deranged old bats trying to outscreech each other. |

You sum up the point perfectly with Snow Patrol and Kaiser Chiefs. Radio stations pick one or two "indie" tracks and play them to death whilst ignoring loads and loads of other stuff completely like it doesn't exist.

and You Raise Me Up on the X-Factor final was Kathryn Jenkins trying to outscreech Rhydian and Rhydian not taking part in the screeching contest...
Kathryn Jenkins, Rhydian and You Raise Me Up sounds like a match made in hell though- up there with Westlife, Mariah Carey and Against All Odds. |

Another dire big hit for me though has to be Gnarls Barklay - Crazy. Seriously, what was so good about this song? I didn't like it one bit. |
