Converting DVD to CD?

How to convert a DVD to a CD?

We recently bought a SONY HXD870 DVD RECORDER. We think it is marvellous! Although not IT literate we have been able to use this DVD for our purposes. We have recorded TV dramas on to HDD, then either watched & deleted plays/movies or saved them onto a DVD. We recently tried recording two radio plays sucessfully, one from satellite & one from freeview .We transferred these two plays onto a DVD but now want to convert them on to a CD, so we can listen to the plays on long car journeys. How do we do this on our computer? We can not 'dub' from the HDD on our recorder straight on to a CD. Any advice much appreiated.

I have had the same problem. The only practical option is to put the DVD into a PC and use one of the many shareware programs to rip the audio from it into a format that can be recorded to CD or MP3, and then burn a CD on the PC.

For more specific advice you need to check what format(s) the car CD player can handle.

Use the wonderful AoA Audio Extractor to rip the audio into MP3, WAV or AC3 at whatever bitrate you require. Link to the right of the page, it's free too.

Just right click on your DVD, make sure it says 'all files' so it will show your disc contents, then just click on the Vob file and it will extract the audio from it.

Ditto to all of the above - I have now successfully turned a radio programme recording on my HXD870 into mp3 using the AoA Audio Extractor.

Firstly, I dubbed the programme onto a DVD-RW - no sense in wasting a permanent disk.

Then in my PC, I used AoA Extractor to make the VOB files into mp3.

Just one minor refinement you might want to use, is A.F.7 Merge, another freeware utility. This allows you to combine files, and give them a new name at the same time.
