How DIFFICULT is it to give up coffee?
I thought I would have a go of giving up coffee, as one of my new year rev's
but oh my god, how tough was this? I was going BANANAS for a mug it's almost as difficult as not having a fag!! (not quite, but almost) |

If its the caffine you're worried about - why not drink decaf?
Going 'cold turkey' on any drug is going to be tough - I'd recommend cutting down gradually - its more likely to work long term. |

I gave up on fags years ago - but I don't think I could give up my coffee, I enjoy it way too much.

depends on how much you usually drink, you might get a headache but after a few days it'll pass.
I remember on that "Truth about Food" programme on BBC2 last year they proved that drinking caffeine won't make you any more alert than if you don't have it. It's only if you you are used to drinking it and don't get your fix that'll make you feel less awake. |

I too like coffee but I switched to decaf recently. I haven't noticed any difference in taste.

I gave it up two years ago as a new year resolution. I had bad headaches and craving but took painkillers to get over it.
Its fantastic not to crave it in the morning and not to have coffee breath ![]() I do like tea, drink hardly any and dont have any cravings |

I gave it up last year. I didn't get much cravings, but the nausea and headaches were far more painful than anything I experienced when quitting fags

![]() Ironically, I love decaf, so I often drink that instead...maybe it's the coffee, not the caffeine, that I love...

Ive been wondering this two. I can't drink coffee at the moment because I have a kidney infection and for the past two days my head has been thumping! I thought it might be linked to the illness but now Im wondering if its cafienne withdrawl.

My mum gave up coffee when I was younger. She had to go on beta blockers to control the heart palpitations she got as part of her withdrawal.
It was not fun for her. |

I was drinking far too much coffee this year. I cut right down and now I can cope without any coffee in the day. It was hard for a few days - the headaches etc. but then it was easy.

I am not worth talking to until I have a my coffee and a cigarette in the mornings. When I get into work and go to my office the receptionist takes one look at my face and can tell if I have had coffee or not , if she thinks not she brings me in a coffee and then closes the door and tells everyone "leave him for ten minutes whilst he changes into human mode". She is an absolute darling and I do not know what I would do without her or my caffeine fix.

I've heard that when you quit drinking coffee your supposed to feel great - as in you notice a real difference in yourself?

I once had to do without coffee for a week due to lack of funds, and it was hell. I had a terrible headache for most of that time.
I have now cut down and don't drink coffee at all after about 6.30 at night and don't drink it at all during the day at work, I drink water instead. |

I dont really understand. I like coffee but I'm not addicted and probably have 2 or 3 a day, but why do people get headaches if they dont have them?
It is a stimulant drug. |

I can't go without my morning coffee before I start the day. Only time I like it though is first thing, every other drink I have is either water or lucozade.
Good luck with it though. |

I started drinking six or so cups of coffee per day when I was temping in an office aged eighteen. After a couple of months I realised that I was permanently tired yet had trouble sleeping. I read in a magazine that drinking coffee after about 2pm and or in excess reduces the quality of your sleep so that on waking you still feel tired...and crave another coffee to "wake yourself up"..a vicious circle. I decided to quit the caffeine altogether so jacked in coffee, tea and chocolate bars:
I was soooooooooooooooo ill! I can understand what it might be like to go cold turkey on drugs. I felt terrible, I couldn't sleep or eat, had permanent, horrible headaches, lost weight and had shivering attacks. I kept going, though, and after about three weeks of feeling horrendous and three further weeks of feeling pretty awful, I was cured, had bags of energy and was sleeping really well. I stayed off of coffee for the next five years although I did have the occasional cup of tea. Recently I have managed to treat myself to a morning coffee every now and then (never later than lunchtime or I am too jittery to sleep that night). Keep going with your detox; it will be worth it in the end. Good luck!! xx |

I suppose it depends on how much you usually drink. My mum had a spell where she realised that she was drinking way to much coffee, and just stopped drinking it all together, she had headaches and the shakes for a couple of days and just felt really unwell! If you are trying to cut down I’d suggest doing it gradually, cutting by a couple of cups a day rather than trying to just stop all together.
I like coffee and I usually have a couple of cups when I wake up but I don’t crave it and I don’t feel ill if I don’t have it and my mum is the same now, she enjoys her cup of java in the morning rather than having to throw it back because she needs her fix! I personally don’t think coffee is that bad for you, it’s like anything else imo fine in moderation!
