Any recommendations for a good recipe book for Indian food? I have heard the Madhur Jeffrey ones are good?

I really like this one by Anjum Anand. The recipes are very do-able, considering that I don't live in a big city that has specialised shops. I've been able to get all the ingredients in my local Tesco's, and they've been easy enough to follow.

The only book you need is Pat Chapman's Indian Restaurant Cookbook. The review in the link says it all.

Not a Cook Book but Rick Steins curry recipe in his Food Heroes book is the best one I've tried. None of this poncey teaspoons of spices and cooking in oil malarky, everything is measured in tablespoons and cooked in ghee or butter. Much deeper (not hotter) flavour than any other recipe I've tried.

Is it this recipe? If so then Ads won't need to buy the book.

Not sure I believe the comment "This is the only curry recipe you will ever need".

I found Madhur Jeffrey's books a bit grand! We've got a huge collection of cookery books including plenty of Indian ones and the best I've come across is a cheap paperback called "The Indian Housewife's recipe book" which is pretty down to earth, has some lovely recipes in it and basically does what it says on the cover.

Agree with you!! I have lots of Indian cookery books and the one you mentioned I bought many years ago! Also perhaps another tip is if you have asian friends you can pick up some fantastic cookery tips off them!

I like Madhur's books but they have no pictures! (Or the ones I have don't). I haven't found a bible but I also have the Indian Housewife's Book and it's simple and good.

Cool ... I've never even come across anyone else who has even heard of the Indian Housewife's book so I'm really pleased it's not just me!

O yes and getting recipes from Asian friends is best ... I've got a lovely curry recipe from a friend whose grandad was kashmiri ... have used it over and over for about 20 years with lots of different meats / veg and even fish and eggs.

That's the one, you can leave the spinach out or do it with chicken - a fine curry, and I'd agree with the edit of the original, definately leave the ghee/butter floating on the top.

I've got Madhur Jaffreys curry bible, it's got some lovely recipes but some of the methods can be a bit complex.
