I've just moved in to an old house that has still got the old hard wired connector instead of a BT master socket. I am on TalkTalk 3 and also pay them for the line rental. Can I ring BT and get them to install a master socket or do I have to go through TalkTalk. Would there be a charge from BT as I understand the master sockets are compulsory and the telephone system up to the master socket is the property of BT.

If you pay line rental to TalkTalk then BT will very probably tell you to go forth and multiply You always have to contact whoever you pay line rental to when it comes to line faults or changing sockets.

You need to contact TalkTalk as they are who you pay line rental to, you are no longer a BT customer.

TalkTalk will then arrange with Open Reach (a BT company) to change the socket, Open Reach will charge TalkTalk for the work, TalkTalk will add on their cut and pass it on to you.

Note: Having anyone else for line rental can prevent you making low-cost calls via the likes of www.call18185.co.uk and Primus Saver 2 also miss out on free caller display, so saving a few pennies on line rental is outweighed in higher call costs.

Anyone want to have a small wager on what Talk Talk will tell their customer when asked to do this?

My money's on, "Oh no. BT have to do that. You'll have to contact them."

i think hardwire conversions were done free of charge in the past, but now everybody is out to make money, i wouldn't expect it done for free.

I'd say it's odds on.

Just be aware you aren't allowed to do it yourself. If found you could find a heavy fee your way.
