I have a tv5800 and I cant get proper epg on several stations, some are ok with full listings and times but others such as ITV1 only have now and next, if I go out I cant record much in advance. this was ok before. How can I sort this!!!!!!HELP

What firmware version do you have? If it's older than 5.12.88 then you should definitely update; you probably should update to a newer one anyway.

It's always worth switching off at the wall for a short while too, which does a cold restart.

Are you running any TAPs? For example, with the MyStuff/EIT2MEI system, there seems to be 3 levels of EPG population:

1 Everything fine
2 Native Toppy EPG OK, MyStuff has "holes", usually ITV!
3 Native Toppy EPG has holes too.

Condition 2 seems to occur (for me) if the Toppy is left for long periods on a non-BBC channel (although the latest version of MyStuff may fix this).

As Nigel recommends, a power cycle usually clears things up in both scenarios.

Thanks guys but my toppy is completely as sold,2005, nothing has been added, I am not into that myself, But my son is visiting until am tomorrow so he could do it on his laptop if he was advised what to do, if you could advise I would be grateful. RAY

Do you have your box switched off at night? There have been two different software versions to update your model of PVR since you bought it you see.

If your son is able to get on the net when he visits and logs onto toppy.org.uk there will be people there ready to advise and hand holding if possible through the process.

If it's as sold in 2005, then it certainly won't have the improved EPG code, which is from July 2006; your son needs to go to www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/firmware.php where he will find information about which firmwares to update to, and a guide that explains the update procedure and which software will be needed to do it.

The next OTA update will sort you out anyway. You can record anything you like armed with the radiotimes and telling your toppy to record a specific channel at a specific time anyway should the EPG have any bits missing. If your son is around and happy to delve in I am sure there is someone who could talk him through what to do step by step, button press by button press on toppy.org.uk though

The guide on that page I linked to explains step by step how to do the update from your PC.

To be honest you may find that this problem sorts itself out. Some of the broadcasters (ITV in particular) are poor at providing EPG data. With the original firmware (which it sounds like you have) the Toppy relies on regularly being left on a channel from each multiples (of which there are 6) in order to fully polulate the EPG. So for example if you find little or no EPG for ITV1, you could try staying tuned to that channel for an hour or so. That might help the EPG to populate, if still nothing then it's probably the broadcaster's faut. The latest Firmware deals with EPG data much better, but even with the original firmware you should have usable data. I have a spare freeview box at my house and if that is also missing EPG data I know my Toppy is not at fault!

Please is there anyone out there who could advise a beginner
on what is needed, and how to set up from pc to toppy. I presume that like everything once done I would get used to it,thanks.

By the sound of it austin4404's firmware is too old to support OTA updates. I think it will be necessary to download the latest firmware and update using a PC.

Nigels "Guide to the Bastille Day (July 2006) update" covers how to do an update from a PC. I'd recommend using firmware 5.13.65. There are links to both the guide and the firmware here.

Problem seems to be not the firmware, but either the 'Loader Version' or 'Hardware Version'

I've just bought a new(er) 5800 and it picks up the epgs on all stations inc ITV 1-4
The older one doesn't

Is there any way to upgrade these?

No, but it's almost certainly the firmware. Upgrade to 5.13.65, and put the Toppy into standby at least every few days.

Both machines are on 5.13.65 and are put in standby off every night as well as being powered down once a month

The loader makes absolutely no difference to EPG population. None.

The new loader is found on machines with newer tuner modules, but aside from in very marginal areas, you won't see any performance difference between the two.

If you have substantially different signal strengths on the two boxes, then you may well have a marginal signal on some muxes. But that wouldn't normally cause issues for EPG population on firmwares from 5.12.88 onwards.

Both machines are fed from the same aerial.
The newer machine is at the end of a longer run where it doesn't see Mux B on channel 67. But that is the one picking up all the EPG info
