AH59 you have may be able to explain this to me.I think you have a lot of knowledge about Italian culture. Will Emilia be abe to hang on the Arata name?If she gets married can she double name her children eg Arata-Smith? Why I am a it puzzled I know in my culture we cannot double name kids.

My surname as you know it is my fathers name,however I have my own surname and all my siblings do not use it so each of us has a different surname. So technically there is no such a family ie with my surname. (I only use it for convience but its optional and my own surname has become my middlename hence all my English middle names have dissappeared) My brother who would carry it on has even never used it.

As much as we cant double name for those reasons,our names represent our clans and that is the way we identify.We are not allowed to marry within clans related or not as long as the names say so.So every married couple in this particular group of people will be two different clans,the children then take on their father's clan and even get their own clan related surnames. There is really no way we can double name. (Hope I have not confused you here)

I would think that Emilia would stay as Carmen Emilia Arata if she gets married and wants to stay as such.

In Italy upon marriage both the man and the woman keep their birth names legally and if there are children they will generally take the Fathers name. In Spain it is also the same in that both keep their birth names legally[slight difference with the childrens names, can have both the fathers and mothers] – Emilia’s mother is known [legally and professionally] as Carmen Garcia [I believe to be correct].

As far as I am aware Emilia and Victor are British and in the UK it is only a custom that the women takes the man’s surname on marriage and is not a legal requirement to do so and so again there is no reason for Emilia to change surnames.

On a personal level my Wife has her own surname and I have mine and although there was a fair bit of consideration to her Father’s nationality in keeping separate surnames, it is just that neither of us hold the view that the woman has no real identity of her own.

Thanks AH59 for enlighting me. I love cultural differences,it is one of my best academic areas and I enjoy finding out how different socities are. I think Emilia will remain an Arata professionally as her Mum did.

You and your wife made a decision to keep her individuality.Do you realise then for us our own surnames where devised to keep our real identity as women in a situation of marriage. The married/man's name is only additional,if you are using your father's name like I am doing now,it is the one you lose but under no circumstances can you negotiate your surname. That is why being in the UK we resort to making it a middle name and I have had to explain to my daughter as she was born here the difference between the two names. We have clan functions in the UK so that second generation children can understand the importance of these things. There are other reasons apart from identity eg control of genetic dieases in the population.

It must be remembered that Emilia has so many different nationalities in her extended family :. obviously Italian, Spanish and I recall her speaking of her Romanian Grandmother and I detected an Irish element to her Mother's accent on occassions. It must be interesting at family festivities for them

I believe there is one due shortly,keep checking this thread.If you scroll back the thread from end January 2009,there are a number of vids in the last few months. She has not yet performed in the UK since the show as far as I know. But from time to time there is info on here about her whereabouts.I believe she is in Germany right now.

It is slightly difficult to tell if he is or isn't as Laclique seem to list a lot of acts and some are duplicate acts. It is a shame that they have not seen fit to rewrite the bio completely rather than just swap Emilia's name out, it would show a confidence in the new act.

I went onto the Palazzo website mainly to see if Emilia as mentioned [she is not at the moment]for this season and it lists Victor and his new partner in Frankfurt in November onwards - will wish them success but it is going to be very hard [and probably impossible] for them to reach the levels that Emilia and he set.

It is great to see that Emilia is going to be able to perform her version of the " Skating Aratas" act [with Karel Saly] as well as her "Glass Ball" act at Roncalli's Apollo Variete Theatre in Dusseldorf over the Winter season.

I also remember a post on this thread saying the channel is for Emilia's cousin but it looks like it belongs to Emilia.

The link I posted on that occassion was to the main channel rather than the individual video and so it does change.

The video of Emilia and Victor's last performance was uploaded in October which explains the date and was not when they last performed together.
