Dual Layer Disk Disappointment
Chris Green
04-01-2008
Has anyone else had this problem?

My HXD 870 records and plays back just fine using DVD+R DL disks, but only the recordings it has made itself.

Rather than invalidate the warranty early on, I've chosen not to convert the Sony to multi-region preferring to make 'Region 0' copies of some of my R1 DVDs. (Single layer recordings work fine)

I'm using the same make of ZeroDefex DL disks both in the Sony and in my PC.

Unfortunately, the PC-copied disks only play until the layer change in the Sony, at which point I get an error message that flashes up so quickly, I've no idea what it says. The PC plays them fine, not so surprisingly as that's where they were recorded.

Has anyone succeeded where I have failed, and if so what make of disks are you using?

In my PC, I'm using a Lite-On DVD writer and Nero to make the final burn.

the firmware update only relates to timer recording

can you use another type of disc ?

Well, another make of disk was going to be my next port of call, it's just that I'm stuck now with about 15 of the ZeroDefex brand, although I can still use them for archiving from the Sony.

Somebody once told me that DVD-R disks seem to have better universal compatibility than DVD+ disks, maybe they're right, as this is my first foray into a machine that can handle both.

It's certainly true that even the cheapo DVD-Rs I've been using have been OK.

yes its annoying you have so many, but you can still use them

dvd-r seem always to work

mind you sometimes discs from the same manufactor and with slightly different model numbers can work when other ones dont !

Guess I'll try and seek out a site that offers a selection of disks as a sample - I remember trying one of these in the early days of DVD writers. I wonder if they still exist

your local computer store may sell them singly as they supply students and the like

not that I have much more money right enough

Even more annoying is the fact I've just discovered that my DL recordings made on my PC do play OK in the cheapo Alba DVD player I got in Tescos for 18 quid.

I'll hang onto the DL disks I have made for if/when I buy some kind of HD or Blu-ray player although that will have to wait for a TV update first.

it seems to be that cheap players will play anything as the more expensive players have finer lasers which dont have a wide enough beam to read the disc
