Upgrading the toppy HDD
Gornall Bell
04-01-2008
I'm thinking of upgrading the toppy HDD but have read that the max size you can put in is 250gb, is that true? Also what type of drive does the toppy use, is it a standard IDE drive or one of the other formats?
Also does anyone know when the freeview playback update will be available?

Not, it's not true that 250Gb is the max; quite a few people have 400Gb; I run with a 300Gb Samsung, and a few have installed even larger.

Had a look but it mentions so many different drives it got a bit confusing! All I want to know is what type of drive I need, i.e an ide drive with such and such spec.

I think you can put whatever size you like in there, but it has to be a PATA (old style) IDE disk, you have to be careful about the power consumption, overheating and startup timings (although the latter can be alleviated with a patch). Therefore, it's wise to research your choices and get something that other people have found to work. You may also consider putting a fan in to help with overheating issues -- especially if that's what others have done with your choice of disk.

The new TF5810 will come with a particular type of 500Gb disk that is designed to suit PVRs, so that range would be an obvious recommendation but unfortunately people don't have any experience of them yet.

The Seagate ACE drives in the Humax would be a starting point but I'm not sure if the Toppy needs anything different, or suits the Samsung or others better.
