Can any one help me what it is i want bt to install a telephone line extension for me but the problem i have is the main master socket is in my home office which is only the other site of the wall from the outdoor gray bt box which in my front garden so the drop cable runs direct though the wall from the master in the the gray box so no cables are seen,

But i do not want bt to run cables through the house when they install a extension i want them to run in direct from the gray outdoor box then around the side though the wall direct in to a socket so no cables are seen,

Does any one know if BT can do this i looked in the gray box and they if a spare space in the jelly crimp connector(s) can bt just connect in to there or do they need a special way to split the line,

if we fit the ext'n then we will just make the hole a little bigger to put 2 cables through it, then wire round the outside then straight into the back of the new socket. the new ext'n has to be wired from the faceplate of the nte. to do it from the "jelly" crimps would class as star-wiring and has a decremental effect on b/band. also when you do the standard tests at the master socket, the ext is still connected to the line, and could be a source of a fault. it's alot cheaper to get a sparky to do it than calling us out. you just have to make sure they do it from the face plate, cos if we ever visit and find it we will just disconnect it if it's connected to the crimps outside. hope this helps.

Ok thanks for the info i will do the extension myself then i have a roll of phone cable which i got of a bt engineer before i moved, Also i have a few bt masters in the shed is it ok to use one as the extension socket.

are they the old LJU masters? i.e yellow capacitor on a circuit board with no test socket. if so cut that capacitor off and it's fine. if it's NTE5's the ones with test sockets, you will need to remove all the insides, and wire direct onto the test face plate. just be sure to run your ext'n off the master socket face plate.

Hope I'm not hi-jacking this post. I have an extension that was fitted some years back by BT but it is not wired from the NTE5 but from the junction box before the NTE5. I've recently started using broadband and having speed problems. My ISP is willing to raise this with BT but BT will then do an 'SFI' which I understand will look at all my wiring and I'm concerned that they will remove this extension (I doubt that they will have the record that they installed it years back). It won't be an easy one to replace by wiring into the NTE5 due to the position of where the NTE5 is and where the upstairs extension is (which is probably why BT wired it as they did). Can the Openreach person help me out with some advice here?
